Selling players isn't "the Oilers playbook". It happens all the time, with a ton of different teams. The Oilers are the Oilers because they don't have a playbook.

So not fair...even though I'm an Oiler fan, Giordano deserved better. Hope his recovery is a smooth one.

Where you draft isn't as important as how well you scout. 2008-10 picks at 12-14 that turned out pretty good: Cam Fowler, Jaden Schwartz, (Tarasenko at 16), Kulikov, Myers, (Karlsson at 15), etc.

Obviously you can still draft a good player. The first part of the statement is statistically false. They're both important, but higher picks have higher chance of success.

Yes, but you don't control where you pick. If you have good scouting it will mitigate the chances of missing on the picks that you do have, I think was his point. You might not get a superstar at #14 but good scouting can at least help insure you will get an NHL player. Unless you're going to finish bottom 5 every year, I'd say scouting is most important.

Just to try and get this thread back on the rails...

Sickening news for sure. Had the feeling this was going to be the verdict after hearing Treliving yesterday on 960.

Has it been announced if the tear is at the elbow or the shoulder?

At any rate...godspeed Gio!

The difference is, that the Flames are currently in a playoff spot. Selling off when you have a "good" chance to get in the post season is a poor message to send to your players.

Brad.T. looked emotional having to deliver the bad news. Hope everything goes well for Gio and he comes back even hungrier next year. Good luck Captain.

The Canucks lost Tanev, Hamhuis, Bieksa for a while, and still managed to maintain a relatively good record. Edit: And Edler...

You guys have a good coach, a good system, and lot's of extremely hard-working players. No more floaters in either of these line-ups, and that's why you'll continue to be successful.

Big loss, but I honestly believe that your team should go through it. I would love ya'll to make it over the Sharks.

I'm going to be the irrational optimist and say the team adopts the "me against the world" attitude even more and make the playoffs.

I wonder how serious is a surgery like this is? Is there a chance he will be adversely impacted long term? Am I worrying over nothing?

Being afraid to make short-term sacrifices because you might sneak into the playoffs is straight out of the Leafs playbook.

And if there's anyone on the Flames roster who doesn't realize this is a rebuilding team, they need to listen to their boss more. Treliving has publicly said the team has to be patient and not lose sight of the long-term goal about 60 times so far this year.

Quitting because it is easier is straight out of the Oilers playbook.

Haha, one poster gets ripped on for suggesting we should've been major sellers and I get ripped on for thinking we should've tried to replace Gio and Glencross by being active buyers. People just hate everything today.

I'll just add that standing pat isn't a safe bet either because for all we know Gio might not be the same and we take a step back like Colorado. You seize the opportunity to compete in the post season, prices were high but we could've flipped our acquired picks to bring in one of the many players that were avavailable today. Would not have set us back at all. I think we could use even more veteran presence than we have. But now our fates in the hands of an inexperienced group missing it's leadership. Going to be a gamble.

So as not the appear desperate and driving up prices when exploring the possibility of trading for a D man?

Welcome to the rebuild, it will require more patience than two years.

How does it not set us back in the future to spend picks?
