Treliving did well.
-Got a 2nd and a 3rd for a player that wasn't going to extend his contract with us. Wanted more money, and he will in free agency.
-Got another 2nd from a player who wasn't going to re-sign with us. Gave him to a division rival, but they had the best offer on the table.
-Didn't disclose the Gio injury until after the deadline.

A+ for using the "Maginot Line" in an article about the NHL trade deadline.

Treliving stuck with the rebuild in my eyes. We're three picks richer and only added a depth blueliner for free. (I'm somewhat hopeful that Schlemko might be a positive surprise actually, but we'll see.)
I think Treliving did about as well as could be expected under the circumstances. On the other hand I don't think he had much options, since we are also hunting for that playoff spot.
Solid basic GM work. B+
Overall I feel pretty good about what went down. Trying to forget the captains injury for now.

I like what Treliving accomplished... even the trade of Baertschi which was somewhat forced upon him. Given the background info on the Baertschi trade, Treliving did well.

An unsexy steady approach.
There are no shortcuts when it comes to building a championship calibre team. As Treliving has said repeatedly, we're accumulating assets. Now isn't the time to go big game hunting. Turn some of those second rounders into wins on the draft floor, and we're looking good.
We need D-men, and good d-men are often found in the 2nd round.

Put me in the disappointed category.
You have a team currently sitting in a playoff spot, with their own destiny in their hands, and they got there through hard work, effort, and sacrifice.
Now the trade deadline is gone, and the team is nothing but weakened for the home stretch - a cruel twist of fate taking Giordano out of the lineup, and the self inflicted excision of Glencross. And to offset this their GM. . . . Picks a guy off of waivers.
I'm in no way advocating selling the farm for a Cinderella run, but this organization has re-stocked the prospect cupboard: Gaudreau and Mohahan on their top line, guys like Poirier, Ferland, and Granlund all looking not out of place in the NHL, and Bennett and Klimchuk in the wings.
So, when I see the Flames having 15, 45, 48, 50, 75, and 80 in the upcoming draft, it says to me that there was room to make a move to reward the guys in the room now without jeopardizing what they're trying to build.
Edit: And no one should take for granted that the progress of the rebuild will be invariably linear - that the Flames jumped from Step 1 to Step 3 in their 5 Step plan, so next year's bound to be Step 4. Lots of franchises have see promising rebuilds regress unexpectedly (see: Colorado). A chance at the playoffs this year is nothing to dismiss out of hand on the assumption they'll be right back here next season.

####ty day overall for Flames fans this season. Sad that Gio is done for the year and not expecting much at this point. Will be lucky if we sneak into the playoffs all things considered.
Treliving made the best of not great circumstances. Hopefully the picks pan out for the future.

I can see us drafting twice in the first round (hopefully with one top10 pick) and reaping the benefits of patience.
I had a good feeling about the Glencross deal, which worked out great, and I have a good feeling about this. Initial sting from Bärtschi trade has worn off when all the facts were presented.
Do his doubters still feel he would clear waivers?

A hard working team takes an unfortunate hit losing their captain. They pass the deadline and do not improve.
Hopefully they can still push for the playoffs as a team. It'll be great for development. I think they should feel cheated by not getting some support on D.

It's disappointing to see Baertschi traded to Vancouver. But as mentioned in the piece when you consider that he didn't really want to stay with the organization and that he would be waiver eligible next year, it is apparent that it was time for action. Treliving acted on the situation and got something done. That I'm happy with.
Beating a dead horse...a previous GM failed to act on Marc Savard and eventually had nothing to show for an asset that once held value. The Flames come out of this deadline with 3 additional picks between spots 50-80 which is better than they did last year when they should have been selling.

Glad we didn't take on any bad contracts.
Glad we didn't lose prospects for rental UFAs.
Glad we didn't go hunting whales; no Phaneuf, Kessell, OEL monster deals.
Happy with the return for Glencross. Sad to see Sven go, but I'm happy to move on.
Would have liked to strengthen the team a bit, but the guys I wanted (Coburn, Connolly, Wizniewski, Michalek & Stewart) all went for returns which were WAY higher than I was comfortable with. Glad we stayed clear.
Added Schlemko, who is a decent veteran D, for nothing.
Playoffs are now very unlikely, but gutting the team out for magic beans sends the wrong message. In a strange way, Treliving has shown faith in the current squad. Even without Gio I bet they believe they can get into the playoffs and you know Bob 'artley is going to get the best he can out of these guys.
So I guess I'd rate this deadline 'meh'... But a good 'meh'.

Well I know one thing. Mason Raymond is going to be getting a lot of ice time over the next couple years.

Honestly people need to realize that we weren't supposed to be where we are today. Not yet...
Just because we are doesn't mean that we need to start pressing buttons that may or may not improve our chances of making the playoffs. It could really screw up what we've built here.
Add to that Giordano is out and I think management is just letting this season play itself out.
Consider the rest of this season an extended pre-season for next year IMO. They will be evaluating more than anything and if we somehow make the playoffs, just more magic and proof that perhaps we hang on to more of this roster that steps up for the next 20 games.
IMO especially if we miss the playoffs, the off-season should be a busy one.
Love that we're still stock-piling picks.

I am very disappointed. This group earned more substantial support, particularly in the wake of the Giordano injury. They are amazingly in a playoff spot today and the GM didn't accomplish anything to support that, which I find unfortunate. I understand the rebuild mentality and building for the future - he certainly did some good work in that department. But the team is in a playoff spot right now and my goal as a fan of a team that misses the playoffs more often than it doesn't, is to make the playoffs. I feel that there were ways to help support the current group without severely hampering the future, maybe using one or two picks or prospects. No clue what the options were, but feel very disappointed that management essentially waved the red flag on the season.
I do, however, believe this current group could prove all that wrong. That said, their recent play has not inspired much confidence and of course the loss of Giordano. This is where management could have come in and supported and the root of my disappointment

Not sure why fans think the team is throwing the towel by not overpaying for a middle pairing defenseman. This team has played their best hockey this season when injury riddled and while Giordano is probably the guy they could afford to lose the least it's a chance for Brodie to take his game to the next level and if last game was any indication he may have another gear. I'm not counting them out and I think management showed today they like their team and have faith in the guys on the roster. I'm thankful that the team didn't overpay for a rental player like Petry. Really how much would Jeff Petry help this team down the last 1/4 of the season? Maybe a little but not that much as it's not like he's helped the Oilers win anything.

A good recap of a tough day. Flames had their backs against the wall, and managed to not get mugged. That's good.
Picks mean nothing to me. I want to be ready to win in 2 years, not 5 when those picks will be relevant (if they become relevant). It's my hope that Treliving can flip some of those picks to a team that is entering a rebuild this off season.
One less contract today than we had yesterday. That's good flexibility. It leads me to believe Treliving has lots of hopes to sign some picks in the summer. I expect Gillies to turn pro and Jankowski is possible too.
Flames have to take the next step and nothing they did today makes them a better scoring threat or helps galvanize the team.
Silver lining to Giordano being out is an extended look at Wotherspoon and/or Potter. We've needed to push and-man up the ranks, hopefully Wotherspoon can climb with the chance he'll likely be given.
