My buddies and I were at the pub yesterday and cricket came on. We have never seen it before so we started trying to decipher the rules (holy crap that's hard) and we actually started getting really into it!
It's like Baseball, if baseball players were actually athletic in anyway. I like it a lot.
That's awesome you started liking it right away you should definitely check out more of the World Cup. It probably took me 3 years living in Australia to figure out the game but now I'm a huge fan.
The baseball comparison is pretty much correct. If you know the rules of that you already know the basics of cricket.
Thanks I learned a few things about test cricket. Wow it is old though. No mention of two massive changes to the game in T20 and the DRS.
Also, at the World Cup, Pakistan has just beaten the UAE by 129 runs. They are now 2-2 and will be in an incredibly tight chase for the last two Pool B quarterfinal spots with the Windies and Ireland. In the late game in Perth the Aussies are 253-1 after 35 overs against Afghanistan. Dave Warner is on his way to 200 and will likely beat the Afghans all by himself.

Remaining Sked for those 3 teams: Bold are my predictions.
Pak vs SA Pak vs Ireland
Ireland vs Zim
Ireland vs India
Ireland vs Pak
WI vs India WI vs UAE
WI likely goes 3-3 for 6 points
Pak goes goes 3-3 for 6 points
Ireland goes 3-3 for 6 points
All comes down to Ireland vs Pak or the net run rate. Hopefully there are no rain washouts.

I agree with your predictions and do think it will come down to the last game between Ireland and Pakistan for the final spot. If the Windies can keep it close against India and blow out the UAE they should have a good enough run rate to get through.
I also really hope there are no more rain outs. I hate that part of the world cup and not just because it caused the only half decent game in Brisbane to be cancelled. It is okay to have rain outs in a 5 game one day series between the same teams but it is not fair in a world cup round robin where every point matters. Since there is so much space between games if a game is rained out they should try to play it the next day before calling it a no result.
As if to emphasize the isolation, all the area radio stations began to abandon me. One by one their signals faltered, and all those smoky voices so integral to Australian airwaves - Vic Damone, Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra at the mindless height of his doo-bee-doo phase - faded away, as if being drawn by some heavy gravity back into the hole from which they had escaped. Eventually the radio dial presented only an uninterrupted cat's hiss of static, but for one clear spot near the end of the dial. At first I thought that's all it was - just an empty clear spot - but then I realized I could hear the faint shiftings and stirrings of seated people, and after quite a pause a voice, clam and reflective, said:
'Pilchard begins his long run in from short stump. He bowls and ...oh, he's out! Yes, he's got him. Longwilley is caught leg-before in middle slops by Grattan. Well, now what do you make of that, Neville?'
'That's definitely one for the books, Bruce. I don't think I've seen offside medium slow fast pace bowling to match it since Baden-Powell took Rangachangabanga for a maiden ovary at Bangalore in 1948.'
I had stumbled into the surreal and rewarding world of cricket on the radio.
Quote:
But it must be said that there is something incomparably soothing about cricket on the radio. It has much the same virtues as baseball on the radio - an unhurried pace, a comforting devotion to abstruse
statistics and thoughtful historical rumination, exhilirating micromoments of real action - but stretched across many more hours and with a lushness of terminology and restful elegance of expression that even baseball cannot match. Listening to cricket on the radio is like listening to two men sitting in a rowing boat on a large, placid lake on a day when the fish aren't biting; it's like having a nap without losing consciousness. It actually helps not to know quite what's going on. In such a rarefied world of contentment and inactivity, comprehension would become a distraction.
'So here comes Stovepipe to bowl on this glorious summer's afternoon at the MCG,' one of the commentators was saying now. 'I wonder if he'll chance an offside drop scone here or go for the quick legover. Stovepipe has an unusual delivery in that he actually leaves the grounds and starts his run just outside the Carlton & United Brewery at Kooyong.'
'That's right Clive. I haven't known anyone start his delivery that far back since Stopcock caught his sleeve on the reversing mirror of a number 11 bus during the third test at Brisbane in 1957 and ended up at Goondiwindi four hours later owing to a changed timetable at Toowoomba Junction.'

He forgot my favorite part of cricket, the declaration. Try explaining to a newbie that in a Test match, a team can decide that they've had enough and stop batting.

Good game between SA and Pakistan today. Pakistan batted first and posted a total of 222. South Africa all out for 202. Good turn around from Pakistan after losing 2 straight to open the tournament.
In the other game Ireland has posted a total of 331 against Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe are 71-3 after 15 overs.

Pool B looks really tight right now.
Zimbabwe rebounded from a poor start batting to turn it into an incredibly close game with a major controversy. In the 47th over Sean Williams hit what was going to be a 6 but the Ireland fielder caught the ball millimeters from the boundary. Williams left the field thinking he was out however replays showed that the fielder barely touched the boundary while making the catch and it should have been a 6. Since he had left the field however Williams was automatically out and the decision could not be reversed. Zimbabwe then went on to lose by only 5 runs!
Obviously Williams was at fault for not knowing the rules and leaving the field however it is an incredibly stupid rule. If the replay shows the batter was not out they should be allowed back to the crease even if they are in the shower.
Also, I'm looking forward to the big game today at the Sydney Cricket Ground between Australia and Sri Lanka. The winner will likely finish 2nd in Group A and have a much easier path to the final.

What a disaster. England have forgotten how to play cricket.
England won the toss and chose to bowl. Anderson got 2 wickets in his first 2 overs. Bangladesh were 8-2 and ended up with 275. That should never happen.

That's totally a foul ball! How can they get four points for that?!?
Haha touche. When the Dodgers and Diamondbacks opened the last MLB season at the Sydney Cricket Ground the local fans loved foul balls because unlike cricket there were numerous opportunities to make a catch and you can keep the ball. The players were very confused about why fouls were getting bigger cheers than hits or runs.
Also, England is horrible at one day cricket. They are lucky to host the next World Cup or else they might not qualify.

This New Zealand/Bangladesh match is coming right down to the wire. New Zealand needs 20 more from 15 balls... down to their last couple of wickets too.
In the neon green elimination battle Pakistan has defeated Ireland by 7 wickets after chasing down the modest total of 238 in the 47th over. The game should have been over earlier but Pakistan played ridiculously conservative to allow Sarfraz Ahmed to get 100.
The Quarterfinals are now set:
-South Africa (2) vs Sri Lanka (3)
-India (1) vs Bangladesh (4)
-Australia (2) vs Pakistan (3)
-New Zealand (1) vs West Indies (4)
I'm going out on a limb predicting the higher seed will win each game.
