The fact Gio's injury is still undisclosed leads me to believe we're still looking at a d-man.

Asking price for anyone decent is huge though. Look at what Philly got for Coburn. We just aren't prepared to sanction that kind of deal because it requires too much return in potential that we aren't willing to give up (rightly).

I actually think that a guy who plays like Phaneuf could fit in on the bottom two pairings here. So it's a matter of a crap contract and it being Dion. Now the contract can be addressed via retained salary, and also mitigated by more coming to the Flames than just Phaneuf, like a guy with more valuable contract.

So it's just a matter of whether Dion can actually fit as a personality here. I have been someone who figured he was a disruption, and caused friction (mainly with Regehr, who I always liked). That said, he's older now, and I have not heard anything negative about him as far as being dressing room guy for quite a while. Only Gio would have had any history with him I think, and I think they actually got along. So with the right deal I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, and if the Leafs retained 50% he'd be moveable anyway.

I agree. As a rebuilding franchise, most likely we'll end up sticking with what we have and rely on Schlemko/call-ups to step up. The price to acquire Dion or even Kessel will be much too high. No way we don't give up a core piece of our own in return for one of those guys. Frankly if that's the price, they can stay in T.O.
