Being told that the Penguins aren't in the $2.5-$2.6 million price range. Still shopping, but a different store.

Good luck finding a solid 4-5 dman for less than two million.

if gio didn't go down, would have been a great year to eat some $ on wideman's contract and move him.

No kidding. We can give them a conditional 5th for a #1 centre.

Geez. Russell's cap hit is ONLY $2.6 million this year, plus he is signed for ANOTHER year after that. AND we would have to retain salary?
Unless Maatta is coming back, thanks for coming out Pittsburgh. Actually, GTFO sounds more fitting.

Maatta is already at least as good as Russell (when healthy of course). Why would Pittsburgh do this?

They wouldn't. The point is that unless Pittsburgh wants to overpay significantly (i.e. Maatta), trading Russell to them makes little to no sense for Calgary right now for a number of reasons.

i don't get it.
Dman who can score, signed for 2 years, and with salary eaten, in a market light on quality dmen at the deadline. Sounds like a potential home run for a team mid-rebuild

Honestly with the way the other top 4 D-men are getting moved for I would only do it for a 1st and a B+ or A- prospect.
Other than that, NO. We just lost Gio to injury, and Glenncross to a trade. Brad said he was building for the future and in the future you will need good vetrens like Kris Russel.

Giordano got traded? When did that happen?

When we first got Russell I thought he'd be nothing more then a bottom pairing guy at the most. He's quite easily one of the best and most important players on this team now. Baring a massive, massive overpayment, no way in hell this happens.

A lot of overvaluing (/falling in love with our own players) going on here.
Russell is a great team guy. He's all heart. He does whatever he can to help the team win within his ability. His problem is his ability. He is just not as good as some of us think he is. He and Wideman are not good in their own zone, and get absolutely thrashed if you look at advance stats. It's easy to see why Russell has so many blocked shots when you see just how many shot attempts against are made when he is on the ice.
People claiming Russell is as important as Brodie is insanity. Brodie pushes the play against MUCH harder competition. Russell loses the 5v5 on battle during easier minutes.
If Russell can garner a significant return (in line with Sekera, or more), then I still say you make that trade every time.

Agree that Russell isn't as important as Brodie. Brodie is going to anchor our blue line when we are a contender.
But in addition to your acknowledgment of his passion and heart, I think you're underestimating Russell's ability to skate, pass, stick-work, read the play and positioning. He is excellent in all of these things. Really his only weakness is his size.
There is a reason that a powerhouse team is inquiring about him and it's not just his very friendly contract.

To short term injury (I hope)
But yeah thats quite a bit of leadership being moved onto the rookies, where I really hope they can handle it, but it's just a massive change to put on them.
