Default Post Yandle Trade: What is Wideman's Value with 50% retained?

So if Yandle at $2.5 is worth a 2016 first, Moore and Duclair, what is the trade value of Wideman if the Flames were to retain 50% of his salary?

Yandle: 28 years old. Cap hit $2.62 million. Stats:

2007-08 Phoenix Coyotes NHL 43 5 7 12 14 -12
2008-09 Phoenix Coyotes NHL 69 4 26 30 37 -4
2009-10 Phoenix Coyotes NHL 82 12 29 41 45 16
2010-11 Phoenix Coyotes NHL 82 11 48 59 68 12
2011-12 Phoenix Coyotes NHL 82 11 32 43 51 5
2012-13 Phoenix Coyotes NHL 48 10 20 30 54 4
2013-14 Phoenix Coyotes NHL 82 8 45 53 63 -23
2014-15 Arizona Coyotes NHL 62 4 36 40 32 -32

Wideman: 31. Cap hit at 50% retained $2.62

2007-08 Boston Bruins NHL 81 13 23 36 70 11
2008-09 Boston Bruins NHL 79 13 37 50 34 32
2009-10 Boston Bruins NHL 76 6 24 30 34 -14
2010-11 Florida Panthers NHL 61 9 24 33 33 -26
2010-11 Wash. Capitals NHL 14 1 6 7 6 7
2011-12 Wash. Capitals NHL 82 11 35 46 46 -8
2012-13 Calgary Flames NHL 46 6 16 22 12 -9
2013-14 Calgary Flames NHL 46 4 17 21 18 -15
2014-15 Calgary Flames NHL 61 12 25 37 28 -5

Yup the Flames don't need any qualified D-men.

if you are still looking towards the future a wideman trade makes sense but it means no playoffs this year tough toss up

Wideman isn't being traded anytime soon.

But I'd say is value isn't anywhere near Yandle's.

Yandle fetched more than expected, and reproducing that would be difficult on its own. Wideman is less reputable than Yandle, and is only the third to fourth best defenceman on a bubble rebuilding team. I'd expect closer to Glencross territory for the return, and thus don't think a trade involving Wideman will make sense.

Why do you say that? Stat wise Wideman's are close if not superior.

One of those guys is supremely overrated. The other is pretty underrated in my mind. I think they are in the same realm in terms of what they bring, but the perception is quite different.

He's three years older and has an additional year on his deal compared to Yandle, so there's more risk. He's also an inferior skater. Wideman has had a good offensive season so if you're going to trade him now is the time, but I don't see a lot of value coming back the other way unless he's part of a bigger deal.

I don't think they're far apart when it comes to talent, but I think Yandle is overrated, and I just can't see a team paying the same amount for Wideman.

The hype surrounding Coyotes players befuddles me. Anyone remember how much Ballard, Michalek and Mara were hyped before they were traded? If the Flames could establish some kind of cottage industry of overhyping their assets they might get somewhere in these trades.

Widemans contract makes him risky. Sure he's been good this season, but he was pretty bad last season. Do you want to roll the dice with that for two more seasons?

If Gio wasn't injured I would not be against selling high here, as the return could be great. But right now selling Wideman would cut the feet from under the team, and that would suck. Even if the odds of the Flames making it don't look that great right now, you want to at least give them a fighting chance.

I'd make the trade in a second if the return was similar but I really don't think it would be.

Don't understand why everyone wants Wideman gone. He's an offensive threat and is quite serviceable defensively. Just don't get it, I like the guy.

I like the guy too, and I don't think it's that people want him gone... it's just a reaction to what Yandle returned. Given his play last year, a return even close to that is too tempting to pass up.

As I mentioned in the Coburn thread, a D needs to be lined up to replace him (like... Coburn) on the 2nd pairing but acquiring another 1st (and a prospect) in this years draft would be gigantic for our rebuild.

He makes a lot of money and isn't 25 or younger, which on CP = Bad player, old guard, not committed to rebuild, etc.....

Or... it could be the fact that Dmen have been going for a kings ransom over the past couple of days. A 1st and Duclair (give or take pieces) is a serious return for a guy very similar to Wideman and a 1st + McKeown for a guy pretty similar to Russell is a huge return as well. It could be that, maybe.

The potential return is the major thing.

If the Flames could say flip Wideman to the Red Wings for 1st + Ouellet + Frk or Athanasiou, that should be done even though the Flames are in the hunt.

Those other pieces would be great adds.
