Coburn seems to have lost a step in the past few seasons, not sure I'd want him. Foot speed is a problem on this D, guys like Engelland and Smid are already sticking out like sore thumbs.

And even if we have the cap space, I don't want to waste it on washed up guys like Lecavalier. Would rather take on a big contract like Kessel, who while expensive, is actually useful to our roster.

Definitely don't want a guy like Lecavalier clogging up our center position for guys like Grandlund, Bennett, etc.

Plus Coburn and Colburne on the same team would be really confusing from a play-by-play standpoint -- at least on the radio.

If the Flames traded guys like Raymond, Stajan, Bollig, Engelland then I have no issues taking on Vinny's contract. Like other posters said before, the Flames can handle his CAP hit, and he may opt to retire in a year or two.

Gio - Brodie
Russell - Coburn
Wotherspoon/Schlemko - Wideman

That's a very strong, mobile defence that will compete for several years.

I know Gio is out and we need to plug some holes, but we did just grab Schlemko off of waivers. What is our incentive to take another D-man right now? From what I gather here, Coburn is a little slow, and otherwise just a run-of-the-mill D-man. We want to make the playoffs, yes, but we aren't loading up because we expect a run for the cup. Doesn't seem like a good fit for the organization unless we are getting something more out of the deal. To be clear, Lecavalier and his awful contract are not things that we would want as something more.

Gio-Brodie
Russell-Schlemko
Coburn-Wideman

Slapping Coburn with Wideman let's Widmean lose Offensively while having Coburn there to cover up his Defensive liabilities. Career +23 and a -1 this year on a porous Philly team.

they trade Stajan, I would have no issues with having Monahan, Backlund and Vinny as our top 3 with Granlund, Colby or Jooris slot in for next year. Then have Bennett as our number 2/3 switching with Backs next year and Vinny stays as the 4th line centre.

Coburn, 6'5 and 220 lbs
Lecavalier 6'4 and 215 lbs.

That would be a lot of size. And some 100+ games of playoff hockey experience.

Don't get me wrong, it would be strange having Lacavalier here but it wouldn't be a bad move. Like Itse said, he is a big body.

How has he been playing this year?

17 points in a 4th line role. 45 gp. -8.

He may not have the speed he used to but I really believe he could make the Flames PP much better. Kind of like a Jagr anchor.

If we get Coburn, I think he pretty much takes on Engellands spot on the 3rd pair.

Gio - Brodie
Russell - Wideman
Coburn - Schlemko/Diaz/Engelland/Smid

I don't think Coburn is any better than the 2 guys we already have on the 2nd pair. He plays a different style, but overall comparable in effectiveness.

45 GP, 7 goals, 10 assists. Plays as a 4th line winger, so not bad for that role, but at that price...

Nothing. We're discussing the potential to take on a bad contract to acquire a valuable player for less than market value form a cap strapped team. This has been something the Flames have been trying to do since Feaster was GM.

I'm confused... is "the board" talking about lecavalier, or a few people who participate on said board? Must not be a difference.

Hell yes to Coburn. Even if it means taking vinny. Disgustingly overpaid but could decent bottom sixer for us if you can get over 2004

I have no problem taking Vinny back if we can get rid of Stajan. He can be an expensive 4th line C but hisncontract will expire when Bennetts ELC does

Coburn is absolutely a #3 defender with good foot speed. It's actually impressive how mobile he is for such a big body.... Not sure what other people are seeing calling him slow? He's undoubtedly Philly's best defender, and would bring a massive boost to our team.
