Default Job Advice...

I've been contacted and offered a job in the States. I've never really thought about going to the US, I've always thought of myself as living within the Canadian boarders.

But the job seems pretty good, security isn't the greatest though, but the pay does make up for it. Definately opens a lot of doors for me. The guy that has the position now is only new, but apparently isn't getting along with one of the other high ranking workers there.

It's just out side of New York City, which is great, I'm told NYC is an amazing place to be and live. So atleast it's not Middle of Nowhere, USA.

All seems great but one thing...

I don't know if I really want to be GM of the Islanders, lol

Well if the position doesn't work out they may be in need of backup goaltenders.

Are you happy where you are? Do you enjoy living where you live? Do you have sincere friends that you think you will miss? If you answered yes to these questions, don't do it. I don't regret many decisions, but the one decision I regret the most was taking a job in the U.S. and leaving a really good situation I was in back in Calgary. Sometimes you have the world by the tail and you don't know it. If the things I asked you are important to you, there is no reason to move. Money comes and goes, but a good home where you feel grounded, a community that you honestly love, and friends that would lay down for you, and you the same for them, are things that money can never buy.

True that. Although I think your response was a whole lot more serious than Maritime's question...

LOL! This makes your Edmonton bashing even more ironic, considering you YOURSELF ''bolted'' to the US.

Guess you weren't happy in Calgary hey? Just like Samsanov, Spacek, Peca and all the other guys you make false claims about.

Anyways, my opinion: You can never be afraid of change. While Calgary and Edmonton have both been great cities for me, I want to see the world. I want to live in a big city. I want to spend a year or two in the Carribean, earning 100,000 tax free. I want to give Austrailia or Toyko a chance.

You can't progress in your own life if you look at what your friends scenarios are. Everyone goes their own directions after marriage. Do you really think friends would stay in a certain city just for you? Enjoy challenges in life.

If it's a well paying job, and it's freaking close to New York City, why not give it a try? Don't like it, you can always move back. If you pass this opportunity, you perhaps will later regret not taking the chance.

never did I think this thread would take off to a serious discussion about moving from place A to B.

However since it has, I'll just throw my two cents in about my personal situation on the topic:

I actually do want to move, meet new people, see a new city, and have new experiances. *If* I was offered a job in New York I don't know if I'd take it, however if I was offered a job in Calgary, Ottawa, or Halifax I wouldn't think too hard about it, I'd probably think harder if I was offered a job at home. I need a change, I need something different.

But alas, most people took my serious setup as just that serious, and read but didn't register the fact that the job offer was for GM of the NY Islanders

I still don't have your sig done, MQS. Sorry.

Is that why you didn't offer me the assistant GM's job?

If I took the position, I'd offer you the assistant position

I too, like change.
I moved, from germany to Calgary to edson alberta...
change is as good as a rest.
and its great to experience new things.
if myself or my wife were offered great jobs elsewhere, I think we would pack up and move.
I would have to sell the businesses of course, but my wife being a vice principal, I am sure could find employment elswhere.
ya have to experience new stuff.
Personally, I'd live in Portland Or in a heartbeat!!

Hey, Maritimer, if this GM job don't work out I understand the USA is rather desperately, 'looking for a few good men'. Look before you leap.

# 1 Question and only thing that you should be thinking about.

Are you legally able to work in the states as of now? If not, is your prospective company experienced with rellocating people?

I had a situation around a year ago that put would have put me in 7th heaven professionally, but I ended up getting screwed with immigration, ended up turning down 2 other offers from legit developers and being underemployed for months. I'm actually just now finally getting back on track career wise. Beware. Make sure they know whats involved with importing a canuck, and are willing to go through the wall for you.

Btw... not to thread Hijack... but incase anyone was wondering I was able to get a new game design contract within 8 days of being laid off last week... So... viva le experience, and thanks to the helpful responces to my thread.

Good point, I don't really see myself going to the USA (or any other country for that matter, not to pick on the Americans) for work. I love the Canadian culture too much, I love my Tim Hortons, I love that sense of identity, I love the little things (commercials, CRTC, CBC, CTV, Global, etc).

I could see me in the distant future doing contract or consulting work there (depending on how I choose my career path to go). However, not right now.

You do bring up a very Very VERY solid point about immigration. That's something I can't get my head around, as I can move province to province without any real problem.
