Either way you are going to have a player who wants to be playing, and part of being professional is knowing that it's a team game and sometimes you have to suck it up and do what's best for the team.
|
I stated why I thought the way I did. Merely speculation on my part. I have no idea why they would play who they play. Point is, Potter has been sitting up with the big team. Now there is a chance to play and Potter is in. Wotherspoon takes the next seat and waits for his chance.

Judging by Hartley's past history, he likely needs to spend this game in the press box, get one or two practices in with the team, then assuming Gio is still out, he'll get some ice time.
If they go with Potter tonight, it's likely because Hartley feels like he'll be a better option in this game, simply because he's been around practicing and knows the system. They'll give Wotherspoon that opportunity is my guess, and baring Potter drastically outperforming expectations or Gio coming back, he'll be in next game.

Roger Millions (I believe) mentioned on twitter this morning that Gio was still with the team and has not been sent back to Calgary..... yet

Yes... lots of teams out there lose a Norris caliber defenseman and just call-up AHL prospect X and roll on with no harm.

No kidding! Blackhawks for instance are stacked but without a doubt will feel the pain of missing Kane.

The way Gio plays I wonder if he can play a full season very often. This injury was kind of a fluke though.

What do you mean by this though?
He'll take the body but doesn't have a phyical game of someone say like Bouma. He'll block shots but not like a Bouma/Russell. He doesn't have his head in his feet and takes big hits all the time like a Hall.
He plays a pretty active game but nothing I really see as being a high injury risk game.

Strange how little faith it seems this management/coaching staff has had in Wotherspoon after how awesome he looked last year. He keeps getting called up but never gets to play.

Please dear lord just be a 2-3 week thing, tops.
It was suggested on the FAN yesterday that in light of this potential injury, the Flames should pursue Yandle. Has that been discussed here yet? I think it wouldn't be a bad idea. At least if management wants to show the young guys they're not throwing in the towel on the hunt.

I think the cost of acquiring Yandle would be very steep and I doubt Arizona wants to send him to a division rival.

Would rather not considering how much it would cost to get yandle. I know it's been said that management needs to reward the players for their effort by making a trade to improve the team to help them make the playoffs.
I think management should just try to send the message to the players that they have faith in this group and that they believe the players in that room have what it takes to make the playoffs without making a big trade. Show faith in Russell, Brodie, wideman, and even Diaz that they can all pick up the slack and stay in the hunt while giordano is out. No one can replace giordano for this team but I hope the flames can just rally around the adversity and pull through. Don't want to trade prospects or picks for a rental or for players like yandle that will cost a lot.

He'll be costly but I don't think Arizona cares about dealing within the division because they're not competing with anybody and won't be for some time by the look of things.

Well, hopefully the team can rally behind this and win a few for Cappy. This team did go on a tear early in the year when we were badly injured. And I know in years past, even though nearly all the players are different now, the team did pretty well without Iggy in the lineup.
This will hurt for sure, but I don't think it has to be the end for the team. Nothing this team has done this year has gone according to script. They've succeed when no one gave them a chance. When they weren't supposed to have a chance. This could just be another one of those times.

He has missed quite a few games the last few years, after having two 82 game seasons.

He plays hard, plays a lot of minutes, and he is getting older.
Can't change his DNA. Really hope he is back soon.

We may have been badly injured but our D were intact and playing great.

my bet, and it's been alluded to already, but Calgary is currently in negotiations regarding a Dman already and don't want this information used against them as leverage in the deal.
He's injured but keeping the length confidential is important so your trade partner doesn't try to rape you too badly knowing you need a Dman.

I think people's memory is biased because he was fairly shakey. In his 14 games he was defensively the worst defenseman despite getting the softest minutes. He wasn't good by any metric.
However, he seems to have really taken a step in the AHL. Still not sure how ready he is
