Well, Feaster wasn't really the architect. Right from the time he got here he was trying to get younger and cheaper all while attempting to accomplish the unenviable task of winning with Iggy before his contract was up.
...and he certainly didn't sign any ridiculously bad Clarkson type deals.
Feaster had his warts, made some mistakes, and had some narrow misses, and that's been beaten to death, but he left us in pretty good shape for the new management to continue on with the rebuild.
Certainly never had any contracts that were so bad he had to what Nonis just did.

I hope he does well there too. I mean it would be hard to be worse than he was with the Leafs. Not that they ever really used him "properly" (like he was in NJ). And I don't think the way his Leafs career started - getting suspended for leaving the bench in pre-seasons - helped him any.

Interesting tidbit I saw posted elsewhere. Horton had a full NMC, wonder why he would agree to waive to go to Toronto where he would pay a bunch more tax?
Wonder if there isn't some sort of backdoor deal also.

If Horton is never going to play again, why does he have to move to Ontario?
I doubt Horton is moving anywhere, which would affect where he pays taxes.

If he is paid by an Ontario company would he not have to pay Ontario income taxes?

I get emails from Sportsnet590 which is mostly Leafs BS but their subject lines are hilarious...
In particular tonight...

Canadian taxes are based on residency. He wouldn't pay Ontario taxes unless he was living in Ontario.

The marginal tax rate in Ohio is 45%, while it's around 42% in Ontario.

No, I don't think you do get it.
Clarkson is overpaid, but Horton is much more overpaid because he doesn't even play.
Columbus is not a cap team so they don't benefit from LTIR - they are paying 23 players + Horton. (on a budget)
Now however, for the price of Horton, they get Clarkson + another minimum contract. In other words, 21 players + Clarkson + minimum contract.
Clarkson doesn't need to be worth $5.25M, he only needs to be better than their 23rd roster player. If so, he is an upgrade from Horton.
I don't get why people are having trouble with this - it's a great trade for Columbus.
It is also a great trade for Toronto - caveat being, Nonis created this mess and now they are cutting a $27M cheque to fix his mess.

Caveat being, Columbus signed a player with uninsurable health risks to a huge, long-term contract in the first place.

Trevieling must have been asking for a pretty good prospect for Columbus to settle on Clarkson.
Is this the 3rd time in less than a year that the GM has been close to acquiring a good pick or prospect for trying to take a bad contract on?

It is too bad for Calgary, the other team that could - and would - eat Hortons contract, that Toronto is in such a mess that they were able and willing to eat Hortons contract without even getting an asset back.
This was another great chance for the Flames to buy an asset. But Toronto is in such a mess, that they ate Hortons contract for free.
Think about that, Toronto fans, before you start pounding your chests.

Nobody is pounding their chests. For the next 5 seasons I will not have to watch David Clarkson on the 2nd PP unit. This is a good thing. No one here is saying that Dave Nonis is a great GM. We all know he gave Clarkson the contract in the first place. But as a Leaf fan, I never thought they would be able to rid themselves of that contract. So the fact they got rid of it (and so early on too) is a little bit of sunshine for us Leaf fans. But hey, who knows...maybe Nonis freed up the capspace to sign Vermette to a 7 year, 49 million contract...wouldn't surprise me.

This is a weird trade. I thought it is not allowed for a team to trade for a injured player. That all players involved in any trade have to pass a physical?
Can anyone clarify this as i am just assuming.
If this is so I am surprised that the NHL has not voided this trade.
