I don't think your math is right.
Clarkson = $5MM ish
Horton = $6MM ish
Net benefit to TO if Horton is on LTIR = $11MM.
Obviously I don't know the exact salaries.

I cant believe they got that boat-anchor off their necks.
They should have to throw some picks in or CBJ gets absolutely screwed. They picked up a crappy, vastly overpaid player until the end of time to get rid of Horton's contract?
I'm thinking the Leafs have to add a helluva lot for this to work otherwise thats a Leafs home-run.

I guess they didnt want to part with prospects or picks to get rid of the salary/cap. Guess they might as well get someone to play if they're gonna shell out that kinda money.

FWIW I am being told that the Flames were in on Horton. That is why they were looking at moving out Stajan and Raymond.

Hard to fathom why the Jackets do this. They traded a boat anchor of a contract that will permanently be on LTIR for a boat anchor of a contract that won't help their team on the ice much.

Wow, no matter how immovable a contract appears, there will always be somebody willing to take it on in this crazy league.
Having said that, I bet Clarkson plays light years better in Columbus.

This is the most creative cap circumvention I've seen yet. Nothing wrong with it, just impressed.
This is of course assuming Horton is done for good

That's an odd way of looking at it.
They pretty much get rid of Clarkson's 5.25M contract but take a cap-limiting LTIR contract with Horton should he never play again.

LTIR isn't cap limiting.
It allows the team to exceed the cap by the amount of salary paid to the player on LTIR.

Wow interesting. If I was CBJ id much rather have Stajan and/or Raymond than Clarkson.

If you're going to pay someone, probably better to pay someone who can actually play and contribute to the team. Maybe Clarkson will be better when he gets away from Toronto.

Cap on salary (an internal one I mean)? I mean if they can't spend the LTIR space they get from Horton they may as well get someone that can actually play... that's the only thing that makes sense.

You can see the sense in this deal for both sides, initially at least. The Leads shed possibly the worst contract in the league whilst Columbus gets a fit player in exchange for an injured one. Be interesting to see if the Blue Jackets need cap space in the next couple of years though.
All Nonis needs to do now is get Phaneuf off the books without any retention and he's a shoe in for GM of the year.
