If he's out long term, I would be more disappointed for Gio rather than the team. Don't get me wrong, making the playoffs would be fantastic at this stage of the rebuild, but Gio winning the Norris would be more exceptional for me.
I mean, look at how far he has come - went undrafted, played in the AHL, went to Russia, came back and became one of the leagues's best. Not to mention his leadership skills. He deserves to win it.
I suppose he could still win, but a long term injury seriously hurts his chances.

Would be especially harmful to his Norris chances if he misses a lot of or the whole Eastern road trip.
A lot of those Eastern voters don't bother to stay up to watch the Western games.

I bet he'd be more dissapointed about missing the playoffs.
I worry about him playing with an injury not at 100%. I'd rather he miss a week to get up to 100% rather than play with a nagging injury the rest of the season and perhaps playoffs. Far too often, players come back far too soon and it drastically affects their play.

It was reported last year that Gio finished the season with a hand injury (which is why he declined to play in the World Championships). Not suggesting it's the same or similar injury but it might be wishful thinking that guys are at 100% all the time. If a week is all it takes to be completely healed then I'm all for it, but I have to believe that a 75-80% Gio still dresses and plays.

I bet Gio's already played hurt a bunch of times this year.
On the play, Gio was turned sideways before the faceoff, so he could quickly go to the boards and fire the puck hard around. The NJ player put his stick in because Gio was quick to the puck, and it resulted in the can opener.
