Jays win their arbitration hearing with Donaldson. He makes 4.3M this season.
Okey... now go get a few pieces for the bullpen already (since a real 2B is now out of the question).

Anyone else see Daniel Norris get mistaken for a homeless guy at training camp? Sleeping in his Van outside of a whole foods store in Dunedin.

Doesn't matter what happened last season I always always always get my hopes elevated when spring training hits. Looking forward to see what Donaldson, Saunders, Martin and to a lesser extent Smoak can add.

Minor signing, Jays sign vet Chris Dickerson to a minor league deal.

And Mike Saunders is out until All Star break with torn meniscus in knee. Already Jays lack of depth in OF starts to show. Pillar/Dirks/Dickerson I guess have an opp to secure a starting gig... Ugh.

I don't mind Pillar, but I'd still rather have that position upgraded.

Dirks is still rehabbing his neck.
The alternatives to Saunders are all platoon bats... maybe you can mash two together and get something approaching an average bat but folk can throw any hopes they had of Pompay/Bautista getting some DH days to rest their legs (and keep them healthier) into the garbage can.
Hmph... three days into spring training and the Jays lack of depth is already biting them in the ass.

If you’re still hoping the Blue Jays add a reliever or two to the mix during spring training, it sure sounds like that won’t be happening any time soon, if at all. “If we were to add right now, I don’t see it being in free agency,” says GM Alex Anthopoulos. “I would think if something were to come together it would be in trade. But we’re not actively having any discussions and those normally occur at the end of spring training. … I wouldn’t anticipate any free agent signings.”
|
Quote:
As colleague Ben Nicholson-Smith reported first last week, Blue Jays first-rounder Max Pentecost recently underwent a second shoulder surgery. Anthopoulos described the procedure as “a clean out of his shoulder. He was back throwing and they weren’t finding anything, they had MRIs and so on, so he went to see Dr. [James] Andrews, he had a clean out and they feel like this is going to resolve it, finally. I guess he’d been playing with it the entire time. He’s young, he’s getting his career going, we want to make sure he gets those things taken care of. He should be back throwing in three months, maybe sooner, and expect him back in games in July. Hopefully we’ll get him plenty of playing time and it should be completely behind him.”

I thought I read this morning Dirks should be back to baseball activities in 7-10 days. More than enough time to get his hat into the mix for the LF gig, if the above information is true.

Meh, Sounds more like it was just Cletus. Realistically if you take a random assortment of 30 people they won't all get along.

How frustrating is that Saunders injury? Steps on a flippin' sprinkler head and he's out till the all-star break. Crazy. I was excited to see him as a Jay. I guess we will have to get used to seeing a lot of Pillar in LF, cripes.
Reading that article about Ramus is interesting. I sometimes wonder if Colby actually enjoys being a major league player.

Saunders injury is devastating. The Jays have to shore that up if they want to contend. The OF is weak as is, and to have him out for that long means Rogers has to dip into those purse strings for a replacement. If they don't, it speaks volumes about their commitment.
As for Colby, if I were to guess I think he's just a country boy who has to grow up at some point and realize he has to work for something rather than smoke up with his boys. He probably has such a careless attitude that it gets on others nerves at different points.

Papelbon admitted that the possibility of pitching for Toronto interests him even more than pitching for Milwaukee would have.
“Yes, Toronto, interests me -- if it interests Ruben,” he said. “I know some of the guys on their coaching staff. They’re a good team. If Ruben can do a deal with them, I’d be interested.”
Papelbon is making $13 million this season and has a vesting option for $13 million for 2016. The option kicks in if he finishes 48 games this season. Would he require that option to be guaranteed to accept a deal to Toronto?
“I can’t say,” he said. “I’d have to discuss it with my agent.”
Papelbon said the Blue Jays would “fit his criteria” because they project as a contending club, but he was quick to add that he believes the Phillies can still be a contender, despite management's charting a rebuilding course.

With the injury to Saunders, do we have the assets for a trade? How desirable do we look to someone like LA? They have a glut of outfielders and even though Ethier is slated to make $54 MIL over the next 3 years, he still has decent numbers when given the option to be an every day outfielder. Thoughts?

The budget isn't going to change because Saunders got hurt. It's basically got to be a money in-money out type of deal. So... no Ethier. Think lower quality then that... maybe Will Venable out of San Diago? They have a ton of outfielders, he makes a little less then Navarro so if you move Navarro you have the budget for him. Poor year last year but he's been pretty decent over his career (moving to Rogers would help his bat) and can play CF in a pinch.
