Default Keurig Kold

Keurig offered a first glimpse at Keurig Kold, a counter-top machine that uses pod-based technology to create a variety of at-home prepared cold beverages, including carbonated drinks.

Scheduled for a fall 2015 launch, Keurig Kold will deliver beverages cold and, unlike Sodastream machines, the system will not require a CO2 canister for preparation of carbonated drinks.

I really enjoy my Keurig machine for coffee and tea, so this would be interesting to try out.

So what, they'll use dry ice?? You can't use ambient air, or I guess you could but I'm sure it'd taste different (no carbonic acid) and the bubbles would be really different (Guinness uses Nitrogen I think I read somewhere).

It all depends on the cost and features. And for me that is a sliding scale. I can buy a 12 pack of any of the above drinks for about 40¢ per can. So it would have to be either cheaper, or able to make a cold beverage on demand. Meaning with a room temperature reservoir put in a pod and get an ice cold beverage out.

The latter will be harder, as we all know it's much easier to add heat to something (water) than to remove said heat.

On demand cold and carbonated would be amazing. Don't see how that's possible with the size of unit they're showing.

Maybe the fizz is like a fizzy tablet? That would be awful.

Yeah, I really can't see how this would produce your drink any cheaper. I guess the selling point would be you could have (would be easier to have) a wider variety of drinks on hand, and save on storage, esp cold storage. (Though is it really hard to have 6-12 cans in your fridge, and extra packs elsewhere in the house, then swap out when needed?)

But I guess we will see. If it can do it close to the current price or less, that would be something.

I still don't get how the carbonation happens unless the CO2 is in the pods like paintball cartridges

Of course. Don't know what the cost will be, but I prefer on demand coffee, so on demand pop would be awesome too like this. I don't drink pop all that often, but having this around would make things easier, especially when the kids come over.

How is this more on an "on demand" system than having cans of pop around?

That's what I don't get. I completely get the coffee; we have Keurig and Tassimo at work, and I have Tassimo at home. The benefit to me is that I can have a cup of coffee that is several times better than instant coffee, for about 1/2 the price of buying a cup at Tims (et al.)

People talk about multi-packs of soda; however we really don't see that with coffee. If I want a flavour of coffee, I have to buy 12 of that flavour. There are multi-packs; but those contain around a dozen of each flavour as well.

Something that occurred to me that would make this win, is if you had to add your own sugar. I'd love nothing better than to work my sugar content down.

From WSJ:

The soda pods will contain two chambers, he said. The first will have a liquid syrup for flavoring; the second will contain a pre-form of carbonation that will be released when the drink-making process starts. In addition to pods for Coke brands, the Keurig will also offer pods for non-carbonated cold teas, juice and sports drinks. The company wouldn't say whether they will contain powder or liquid.

The flash-chilling and pre-measured doses of drink syrup are what differentiates the new Keurig soda maker from SodaStream and are probably why quality-obsessive Coke is willing to take such an unusual step.

"Pre-form" of carbonation? Sounds more likely to be a chemical form, like fizzy tablets. Which is vastly inferior IMO. Unless each pod contains compressed CO2 too, which is probably unlikely given both the cost and size (not to mention dangerous, don't leave the pods in your car in the summer!!!).

I guess it could be in between, the pod contains a solid or liquid that somehow chemically creates CO2 in enough quantity that the unit can then compress and put into the water. Either that or it's a lower quality tablet type fizz and the syrup is changed to not need the bitter taste of carbonic acid to taste right, but that doesn't seem like something Coke would go for.

Doesn't matter much to me as I use my SodaStream mostly for soda water, sometimes with added flavour in those low calorie mio type things.

The other thing the Kold does over Sodastream is that it instantly chills the drink. I don't know if this is some flash chill technology as keeping the water reservoir cold would be a energy waster.

Could be, there are some countertop cold/hot water dispensers, so that part of it is probably similar to those. There's thermoelectric ones and compressor ones.

Ultimately I'm sure it'll fall short of my expectations though

EDIT: Now I want that first one! On demand near ice cold water has always been a dream, the water dispenser in my fridge falls far short.
