Habs acquire Devante Smith-Pelly from Ducks for Jiri Sekac
Canadiens Montréal @CanadiensMTL
Canadiens acquire forward Devante Smith-Pelly from the Anaheim Ducks, in return for Jiri Sekac. #gohabsgo
Wonder if that puts the Ducks out of the Glencross market.
Found money for the Habs... Sekac was a UFA signing from Europe.

Anaheim did a lot better than pending UFA Glencross IMO. For Pelly, we would have had to add to the deal.

I don't understand this trade. Swapping prospects based on position of need?

Not too sure about that. Long term maybe, but short term Glencross is more valuable for a playoff run.
Sure he is younger but his 16 points in 50 games are not amazing, and hasn't scored since before Christmas.
Was also recently just called out by his coach, might have been something going on behind the scenes.

Also what Ashasx said below. I think we all think of DSP from 3 seasons ago where he started with the Ducks and then got hurt at the WJC. He hasn't really done anything since then and has been passed in the Ducks organization.

Ducks fans were quite sour on DSP. I don't think he had the value some think he does.
Still looks like a win for Montreal though.

It's funny looking back at when talk started about him signing in the NHL, that a lot of people said to take a pass. This trade just goes to show, you should always take a crack at a free asset when possible.

He's only 22 years old. For context, that puts him the same age or younger than Flames prospects like Baertschi, Arnold and Shore. I would take 16 points in 50 games in one season from any of them right now.
For immediate presence, he might not be worth more than Glencross, but as an asset, I would think he is.

LOL Flames fans would have been pretty disappointed if Jiri Sekac was the return for Glencross yet that's all the great DSP could fetch.

Not untouchable, just Giordano plus/or Monahan/Bennett
