Color me shocked that Poirier is called up. I had assumed that the Flames would have kept him in the AHL all season so that his contract would continue sliding. Goes to show that this organization does in fact mean "Always earned, never given". Poirier signed that contract in good faith too, and it worked out well.
Glad to see Ferland up here as well. My guess as to why he got recalled - he didn't look good after that dirty head by Volchenkov. Seems to be playing well now. I think based on his first call-up, he didn't get a real chance. Hopefully he is at 100% and can do his best to impress the organization.
Poirier is going to be very helpful in this eastern swing. Flames can really use his speed.

No way they trade Ferland. He's probably borderline untouchable. He's one of the only prospects with size and scoring ability.

Does "showcasing" ever really happen? Can't scouts watch games in the minors? Really think it's just something people post on message boards.

"showcasing" never happens. We fans may not see a guy much, but if anyone is interested in Ferland, they have been scouting him in Adirondack. A game or two at the NHL level won't sway a GM.

Not that I'm against the player, but with so many guys pushing I couldn't get why he was secured to such an extent.

I'm more surprised by the extent Hartley has leaned on him in tough situations. For a long time was getting a regular even strength shift, plus power play and PK time. 5-on-3 penalty kill? There's Jooris out there taking the faceoff.
It's clear to me that Hartley likes the guy and isn't afraid to use him. So from that perspective, I don't think it was a mistake to tell him to "get an apartment".

To show what he can do at NHL level. The AHL does not define whether he can skate and hit at the NHL level. I would want to see what he does against some bigger teams. He showed well the last time but was several months ago now..

Takes some of the pain form not seeing Bennett play this year now that we hopefully get to see what Poirier can do. This could be fun!

I believe they had to tell him he was staying. In the CBA for a non-emergency callup after a certain number of days on the NHL roter a player is officially designated as staying.

There are simply to many options... for the Flames to use a roster space for that reason.
I would think, Flames are bringing the right type of player for the specific type of role.... (Ferland.....big player who can play on the checking line)

In a sense, he's right. Ferland is probably worth a lot more to the flames than he is worth in a trade so it would be stupid to trade him. Might as well see how he turns out rather then trade him for a mid round pick or something.

That's a junior thing. Being in the AHL doesn't cause anything to slide.
Edit** The above is completely wrong! I am dumb!

Ferland is not untouchable.
A lot of posters don't really use that word correctly around here.

and you would be wrong on that.
http://web.archive.org/web/201410142...contract-slide
Quote:
If a player aged 18 or 19 signs an entry-level contract with a club (with his age calculated on Sept. 15 of the year he signed the contract) but does not play in at least 10 NHL games — regular season or playoffs — the contract will "slide" or be extended one year. The extension does not apply if the player turns 20 between Sept. 16 and Dec. 31 in the year he signed the contract.
Depending on the contract's structure, the player's cap hit can be affected either by an increase or a decrease. Players who sign at age 18 can have their contract extended (or "slide") two seasons.
While this is fairly straightforward for players returned to junior, it often leads to confusion for fans when 18- and 19-year-olds are assigned to a minor-league club. These situations are no different: the contract still slides, just as examples for Tomas Tatar and Niclas Bergfors illustrate.

Due to his age/when he signed the deal... I'll let someone who knows for sure explain it anyways.. Poirier's contract does slide in the AHL this year. Not sure what the cutoff/games played in the NHL is for that to be removed.
This would be another great sureLoss sticky post to immediately link to when it comes up. Instead of pages and paged of misinformation and guessing.

Two very important pieces moving forward for the Flames. I would dearly love to see them play tomorrow or at any point on this road trip but I just can't see Hartley putting them in there. Maybe a trade opens up a spot, one can only hope.
I really like what Ferland brings and I hope his little slump is a combination of lingering issues with the concussion and confidence in being sent down. Hopefully this sparks him because he was having a great start to the year.

I think we'll see them for 2-3 games or even the whole road trip, then they go back to Adirondack and Poirier's contract slides.

Never said he was. Just said his trade value would be lower than his value to the team at this point. I'm sure Treliving would trade him for a 1st round pick if offered... which obviously wouldn't happen. There are no truly untouchable players, the term is actually pointless so nobody is using it wrong. Offer enough and even Sidney Crosby is "touchable". Doesn't happen because the trade would ultimately make the team weaker overall after giving up five 1sts, Bennett, Monahan and Giordano or whatever stupid amount it would require. The acquisition cost for certain players makes them essentially untouchable, at least for a time, was my point.
