Not sure why he ever had an NHL job. The guy was a professional punching bag.

Marilyn Indahl / USA TODAY Sports
Tom Sestito's time with the Vancouver Canucks has come to an end.

The club and its AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets, jointly announced Monday that the forward won't play for either club for the remainder of this season.

From the official release:

Sestito will workout on his own and will continue to receive his salary while the Canucks work to identify a new club where he can continue his career.

The Canucks and Comets thank Tom for his contributions and wish him luck in the future.

Sestito, under contract through the remainder of the season at a cap hit of $850,000 (as per NHL Numbers), appeared in three games for the Canucks this season, recording seven penalty minutes. In 13 AHL games, he scored one goal and added 20 penalty minutes.

Um. Thats odd. Why? They just told this guy hes surplus to requirements but wont attempt to trade him, waive him, re-assign him or anything?

Has this ever happened before?

Dont get me wrong, it couldnt happen to a nicer guy, Sestito has earned this by being a massive tool so I doubt any tears will be shed, its just unusual.

For some reason it will not allow me to quote it. I will attempt to edit it down to the bare bones.

Weird. Snippets is cool, but not the whole thing otherwise you get your wrists slapped 'round here.

They said they were working to find him a new club. Waiving him won't do anything he was already in the AHL.

The Canadiens did something similar in 2009 when they told Laraque to stay home and not bother coming to the rink anymore.

Good riddance to bad rubbish. I had the great misfortune to date one of his cousins a few years ago and that whole family (that I dealt with including the ex) were so very self involved and just all around less than stellar people. No tears shed here that's for sure.

My impressions, not necessarily fact.

You're right, I forgot about that.

I know the guy is useless, but I didnt think he was completely useless.

1 point in 10 AHL games this year.

For comparison, McGrattan has 4 points in the same number of games.

As much as the guy was a punching bag on the ice, these are the types of guys that end up in the struggle and depression when the career carpet is pulled out from under them.

I hope it all works out for him in the end.

Please insert the clip of Sestito chirping the Rangers, and Brad Richards comeback.

About 19.5 minutes of total playing time in those 3 games. About 1170 seconds. Based on his 850k salary, that works out to ~ $726.50 per SECOND of playing time. What a dream job.

Yeah, but those seconds were with the Canucks, so...

So for those not following the situation, is he just not good enough for the AHL, or what?

I don't know about not being good enough, but this move signals the Canucks feel their AHL team is better off without him than with. That often is the result of an attitude problem. Would love to know the story behind this one.

The guy has never been any good and didn't deserve to play in the NHL. Note that his current contract was signed under the previous GM.

Speculation, but maybe they figured the roster spot was better spent on a young guy who can get some experience in the Calder Cup playoffs.
