Someone's Trying to Access my Account
I thought I should message the mods about this, but a notice to the community as a whole would probably be in everyone's best interest.
I just got an email from CP saying someone attempted to log into my account but failed 5 times and are currently locked out for 15 minutes.
The IP address is 117.169.1.56 and looks like it's from China.
Is it possible to ban this IP?
Like who the heck wants to be me?

I can ban the IP but it'll just come from another one. Not much can be done, fortunately they only get a few attempts.
There's a thread here:

Weird that they'd be hacking CP accounts. I guess that personal info could be found anywhere? Sure it's all bot and script anyway, trolling the internet for passwords and credit info.

You'd be amazed at how fast Chinese hackers attack.
Put in a new firewall at work, accidentally left port 22 forwarded on one IP address to a utility Linux box. It was supposed to be open to a single IP address, but I didn't notice that it didn't paste in (I blame sleep deprivation ), and I just saved the rule. about 2 hours later they were in using an account with a non-default but not hugely secure password. They tested sending 4 phishing email out (this box was allowed to relay through our mail server, now it still is but only to 2 domains), and luckily I spotted them and nuked 'em. Could have been worse. Friggin Chinese hackers... I learned a few lessons about lax security.

Yeah, recent CentOS versions will tell you how many invalid login attempts there were since the last time you logged in successfully, it's not unusual to have thousands if not tens of thousands attempts per day.
I'm just surprised that this tactic is at all economical for them, even with cheap Chinese labour. Gold farming in WoW seems like it would be much more worth while; they've managed to get into a single account and send a few dozen spam PMs for a week's worth of trying.

Perhaps I'm naive about this stuff but what is the purpose of these types of attacks? I don't get it.

Presumably, they do it so that they can get into the account of a known and trusted member of the board and send out a private message from that account to as many users as possible with a link to whatever it is they're trying to sell.
People are more likely to click a "Hey, I thought you might be interested in this..." type message from someone they know (even if it's just through a user name on a message board) than just random spam.

Yeah for people trying to gain access to a forum account, PM spam. They got into one account and managed to send out a few messages.
As for people trying to gain access to the server, that's usually spam as well though that's setting up the server as a SMTP relay or some such so they can send spam emails out for a while until the provider (well, Vox in our case) shuts our account down or otherwise stops them from spamming.
