A headline in the Sun this weekend (quoting Alberta's finance minister) said unions are the only ones who care about the 9 per cent provincial budget cut.
That struck me as rather heartless. It's like saying the only people who care about the cuts in the oil patch are the laid off employees.

I guess but it wouldn't have been those employees that lost their jobs applauding that - maybe someone like Ezra. But the camerman? I doubt it. The broadcasting industry is pretty tight and no one takes joy when they see a colleague lose their job particularly knowing that in some cases it is very hard to find a new job.
My point, and only point, is that I don't think its right to celebrate anyone losing their job.

He lost his TV gig. Still has the paper, still gets on radio, etc.
But I totally understand why some are celebrating the 200 staffers who were fired. SNN represented the Conservatives, which makes them literally worse than ISIL. At least, thats what I take from the circlejerk that is r/Canada on Reddit.

The SNN represented trolling and catered to low information voters or voters who vote only based on emotion. So if that's who happen to be Conservative voters, so be it, but they were like Fox News without quality control (and yeah, I think Fox News actually does have quality control).
As to not celebrating job losses, sure it sucks people lost their job but that's the employers fault for putting out a 9th rate product. We could literally start filming in our basements and put out a better product than SNN. Utterly embarrassing production values and on air talent for an allegedly serious news network.

People realize that most of the staff at media outlets have no ideological fealty to their employers, right? It's not as though workers in the news industry have a lot of choice when it comes to jobs these days.

I don't think this is fair. I'm far from taking joy from the loss of 200 jobs - any antipathy I feel towards SNN has far more to do with their hypocrisy relating to mandated basic cable carriage for their network than anything. Now, I disagree with ... well ... the overwhelming majority of what they have to say, but when you live in a democracy, you have to accept people saying things you disagree with. I do think it's unfair to say that SNN represents Conservatives, I mean, that's a really rude thing to say about Conservatives

The world of news lost three great journalists in February: New York Times columnist David Carr, '60 Minutes' reporter Bob Simon and Toronto Star baseball writer Alison Gordon.
As people all around the world mourned these deaths, Conservative MP Joan Crockatt's tweet explaining the "most important death" in journalism this week was Sun News Network's closure was widely criticized Sunday.
@joancrockatt
Yes @EnrightCBC you missed the truth in ignoring that the most important death in journalism this week was the #SunNewsNetwork. @CBCSunday

He makes a shocking amount public speaking. He needs no job.
On SNN you got the feeling he got paid per use of the word "freedom".
Looks like he plans to be more free on the internets:

LOL - "the debunked theory of global warming". I never paid much attention to him, but watching these clips I get the feeling he is pandering to that segment of the population that eats up this crap. He seems to be too smart to believe it, but smart enough to exploit it.
On SNN and Rebel Media, he is free from being challenged.

That's the thing with this guy, and what makes him much worse than your run-of-the-mill fool. He is too smart to believe his own nonsense, but if it gets him attention, he'll say anything.
He has to know that the people he panders to wouldn't even like him if he was going to marry their granddaughter.

Ack,
I agree with you 99% of the time, but am I the only one getting sick with this obviously tripe (trope? Probably tripe and trope actually) filled sentiment? It's as pointless as 'won't someone think of the children?'. And becoming just as tired and used. 'Someone lost their job. That's a family you know!' So used. And pointless.
Most people have to find new jobs along the way. It's the way of the world. Welcome to Earth. Maybe next time don't join a sexist, racist, homophobic, editorial based spin machine.
Ugh.
No one is celebrating anyone losing their jobs. They are celebrating the worst thing to happen to Canadian 'journalism' in recent history. This is a good thing.

To clarify, I'm not happy anyone is losing a job. Frankly, SNN limping along with a miniscule number of watchers for decades would be ideal, as it would help marginalize their more ludicrous opinionators. I do greatly enjoy the irony of the whining about how the marketplace rejected them, though. Betrayed by the thing that you love! Classic.

Yup we need less empathy in the world. Fully agree.
Look I worked in this industry so I have some additional empathy towards those because I know it is a tough go right now and that finding a new job won't be easy for many of them.

The thing to keep in mind about the media industry these days is there are fewer and fewer seats on the lifeboat. When people lose their jobs, they don't just jump to another company; it's usually the end of their career. Those film editors and sound guys are probably looking at lengthy unemployment and retraining.
Of course, that hasn't stopped the Sun from shrugging off the job losses of public sector workers. So maybe what goes around comes around.
