The dearly departed TV show thread
With the advent of most old TV shows on DVD I thought it would be interesting to hear about people's favourite shows no longer on TV.
I'm always looking for new things to watch on DVD since I never get to see them when they are actually on TV.
I've just started watching the Canadian show "The Newsroom" and I'm really enjoying it so far. Savage wit and sarcasm. Love it!
I've ordered "The Larry Sanders Show" and "Made in Canada" which I hope are as good as they sound.
An old favourite of mine was "Sports Night" which deserved more than the two seasons it got.
So any other recommendations?

Sports Night is a great show...own it on DVD in fact.
Other great shows that are no longer around:
Angel...Buffy had a good run but towards the end Angel was actually the better show.
Millenium
American Gothic
Felicity (he sez with shame)
Once and Again (not the lame show about the single mom and dad...but rather the show about the dude with super human strength under the government's power)
Homicide Life on the Street
Oz
Firefly (a great show that never got a chance)
Relativity

Those 80s family sitcoms...Cosby, Who's the Boss, Growing Pains. I always stop to watch re-runs if I can ever catch them.
A few shows from the 90s, mostly Fresh Price of Bel Air. TVTropolis is great and it show's Beverly Hills 90210. I still remember being ga-ga over Luke Perry.
I've always loved Degrassi Jr High/High and I can't really explain why. 80s Canadian nostaglia perhaps? I've finished the Jr High edition on DVD and now I'm waiting for the High edition to come out. "Everybody wants something..."
I wish they hadn't pulled Freeks and Geek so quickly. I think that show had great potential.
When I was little, there was this evening game show where contestants would type in their answers a big keyboard and solve puzzles. I always remember watching this before my 10pm bed time. Does anyone remember the name of the game show?

I recently rented some of the Mr. Show DVDs. That show got cancelled right when it was really picking up.
The Puf'n Stuf skit is still one of my all time favourites out of any sketch comedy show I've seen.

Coupling is great. Jeff is one of the funniest characters on TV. The episode "The Man with two legs" is hilarious.

Third Watch. At least I was finally able to buy season 1 on DVD...in the wrong region code. I can only watch them on my portable DVD player.

I LOVE that show. I was completely obsessed with it when it was on. Love watching it on A&E. Yeah, I heard that in China or somewhere overseas they have most of the seasons on DVD. NBC is really taking their sweet time getting them on DVD here. I heard it's because of the music and securing the rights or something along those lines.
Other shows, Roseanne. Undeclared. Punky Brewster. Doctor Who.

Sledge Hammer
Twin Peaks
and there was a show that only lasted a half a season with Jay Mohr as a Hollywood agent that was pretty good, I can't remember the name though. Entourage reminds me of it a bit.
Edit: actually it was a producer not an agent, and the name was Action.
More on Action, I think I'm going to check out the dvd, see if it is as good as I remember:

Way too edgy for network TV, this funny, uncensored, naming-names series peels off the glitter of Hollywood moviemaking and exposes the duplicitous but totally addictive, behind-the-scenes truth. Campy, uncesored and very controversial, this "too close to" reality show features guest stars that include Keanu Reeves, Salma Hayek, Scott Wolf and Sandra Bullock.

I really enjoy shows with long story arcs on dvd. They play like a long movie on dvd and are better then on TV with the week or longer wait between shows. Examples are Star Trek DS9, Doctor Who, Voyager, Buffy...

This discussion begins and ends with SAVED BY THE BELL......love watching its reruns at 4am while I get ready for work. Hate the Miss Bliss episodes though, although the one with the bully(Deke) who couldn't read still makes me laugh.

Greg the Bunny had to be one of the funniest shows on.
I know Futurama is coming back but for the moment it's still in the "dearly departed" status.

I have to agree. Funniest thing was when they brought back Family Guy, it starts off with Peter saying they've been cancelled, and one of the family asks if there is any way they will be brought back. Peter replies "not unless all of the following great shows get cancelled......." and then goes on to list about a dozen shows that had been cancelled by Fox that year.
