I'll be mostly fine with whatever decision they come to. The safe way is to send him back to Kingston. The other ways may lead to regret in the future.

Is this decaf coffee? Is it fair trade? Is it locally roasted? Just what exactly do we know about this coffee?

I for one think that a piping hot green tea would do just fine for Sam.

Thing is, even if he just gets 3rd/4th line minutes plus a bit of pp/pk time, it might be the boost the Flames need to push us into the playoffs.

I have no problem with keeping him on the Flames with Backlund, Monahan, Stajan and Jooris all capable of giving him sheltered minutes.

Exactly what Monahan had last year.

Are you thinking of playing him as winger then?

Unless he can actually help the Flames (who are pretty good right now) and outplay a present guy for sure, I'd prefer to save his 10 games for the start of the season. You can't really shelter someone in a playoff push. And it's not a real time for an experiment.

Enough of this coffee nonsense.

Give him a bottle of 20 year old Jameson's Irish whiskey, to polish up his gullet, and stiffen up the liver.

He'll open-ice demolish some poor Ranger, and fight him after the fact. Johnny can bank a shot in off his shin-pads, and then through sheer blood and guts alone he'll drive home a garbage goal for the Gordie Howe hat-trick in his first NHL game.

I like my Sams like I like my coffee, strong and intense but with a smooth finish.

The only caveat on that would be if he has a setback in the next week or two and isn't cleared to play until after the deadline. In that case, I believe that as long as he's sent directly to the OHL upon being cleared to play, he'd be AHL playoff eligible, but if he played a game for the Flames (either AHL or NHL) after the deadline, he'd only be able to play in the NHL when Kingston's season ends.

That's why I said it's probably not going to be a big factor in what the Flames do with him. The worst-case scenario is that he has to come to Calgary after the Frontenacs' season ends, which isn't really a bad thing at all.
What a weird rule, and one that doesn't make a lot of sense. As I understand it then, Bennett is stuck between the following unfortunate realities:

· He is technically too young since he is a CHL player to be assigned to an AHL roster until his OHL season is done.
· The Flames cannot send a player to play in the AHL after the TD if he was not already on the AHL roster at that point.

So then, it would seem that the likely path for Bennett is AHL conditioning stint, followed by either a game + with the Flames, or a reassignment back to the OHL.

My guess is that he plays at least one game with the Flames pre-deadline, finishes the OHL season with the Frontenacs, and is then is available for both Adirondack and/or Calgary in the playoffs, if they continue to play.

The ten games were for this year. No way he gets sent back to Jr next year.
No way.
But yes, as you say, one must be careful experimenting now.

Sheltered minutes to the tune of 16 min/game that Monohan had last year?

Bollig/Stajan have been filling roles you're suggesting at roughly 10-12 min/game and no one currently on the PP deserves to be removed at this point to boost Sam's ice time that much down the stretch so I struggle to see how this would be an option.

Depending on the position of the Flames whether or not they are in a playoff position, I bet they play Bennett during the last 10 games of the season just so they don't burn a year on his ELC.

But if they are in a position to make the playoffs I am sure Bennett will make an immediate impact during the playoff run.

Since they can't return him to Kingston and then re-call him when ever they want, I figure the'll send him to Adirondack for a couple of weeks conditioning, then let him return here for 9 games (or more if he plays like Mony did last year) and then maybe or maybe not, send him back to Kingston till the end of their year.

Who knows, maybe he'll blow the doors off and make it impossible for the Flames to send him back to the OHL..

Thats my hope anyways.

The last 9 games of the season (he can only play 9 games before burning a year of his ELC), run from March 25 to April 11.

How can they keep him around here till March 25?

Yeah. Sheltered like Monahan last year.
Take no offense.
Monahan had among the easiest zone starts and quality of competition of any centre in the league last year.

And it served him very well.

By the time that all happens, Kingston's season will probably be over.

Let's say he's activated next Wednesday to maximize the number of games he can play in the AHL (Adirondack has 6 games between February 27 and March 10), then returns to Calgary once his two weeks are up. Then, he starts his 9 games on March 13 against the Leafs. Game 9 would be March 29 in Nashville (if they play him for nine straight games).

Kingston plays their final regular season game on March 22, so they could be close to elimination in the playoffs by the time his 9 games are done.

That's one reason I think he'll be sent back to Kingston directly, without any AHL or NHL games. Sending him back now will let him get re-adjusted to the OHL and life in Kingston with a few weeks left in the season so he can be ready to help them for the playoffs.
