So, so sad. Rest in Peace Monty.

I will forever remember the hugs and kiss I got from you on the ice while celebrating the Campbell Conference Cup victory in 2004.....

We will miss you.

@mirtle Don't speculate, ever, on something like this. You should be deeply ashamed and let it inform your work for the rest of your career.

That's how I feel.

I will always remember his role in the 2004 cup run and him being one of the two "dores".

Thanks for the memory and RIP.

“It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Steve Montador. Steve will always be remembered to us as a member of the Flames family. We are very proud that he wore the Calgary uniform over six seasons and also of his important contributions during that period both on and off the ice. We would like to express our sincere condolences to the Montador family. This is a terrible loss of a wonderful young man; a great teammate known for his big heart and character. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure to have known and worked with him.” - Calgary Flames Hockey Club

“Steve became a very good friend during our days as teammates in Calgary and Florida. He became a member of my family. I am very sad to hear the news today of his passing. He was a wonderful guy and great teammate. Caring, intelligent...everybody loved Steve. He was so full of energy and life. Steve worked hard for everything he got and made a name for himself in the NHL. I will always remember him for his passion, desire and positive energy around the locker room. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.” - Martin Gelinas

“I loved playing with Steve Montador! He was the ultimate team guy and great person. The type of person willing to do anything for his teammates and friends. I remember Steve as playing such an important part of our 2004 Stanley Cup Finals team. He had the ability to bring everyone together and was so enjoyable to be around; he would light up a room with his presence. I’m so sad today to hear the news that we have lost an important member of both the Flames and hockey family. We will all miss you dearly Monty.” - Craig Conroy

I remember Montador suiting up as a forward a few times. He was such a hard working guy that you just wanted to root for.

This is so terribly sad.

Pat Burke is right. Cluster suicides, but also there is an increase in fatal accidents in groups who identify themselves as peers with victims of suicudes, murders and accidents. I'd encourage anyone who is finding themselves effected by this to talk with someone, the dark side of our minds is powerful.

I can't comment on the circumstances as I don't know them but sometimes it's not always easy. Far too often it's a product of the environment. I've seen far too often people can be inconsiderate. I really hope this sheds light on the fact that everyone is special, anyone can feel depressed at anytime.

35 years old... What a shame.

I was pretty bummed out when Sutter disassembled that 2004 team. Monty wasn't exactly Rob Blake out there but he was heart-and-soul.

In many ways Monty was that 2004 team personified. Great heart and soul player and proved he belonged in the NHL. RIP Steve Montador, thanks for the memories.

Very sad to learn of Steve Montador's death. Long before the NHL, I knew him as a young baseball player, and he knew me as his coach.

Commodore on Montador: “The way his career went, the way people regarded him, he did personify what went on (for the Flames) in ’04.”
