Default More Police Brutality in the US

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/m...isk-goes-awry/

Sickening how this continues to happen. The US police system is a joke.

Poor man wasn't even doing anything, can't speak a lick of english and gets abused for no reason.

I don't understand why he kept 'turning away' from the cops.

When you are being questioned by a cop, you don't turn away and start walking. That is just common sense. He should have had more respect for the law.

The force the cops used was un necessary, they should have grabbed his arm and nothing more. I hope the cop gets punished for this.

What law did he break? By being a brown man?

He doesn't speak english, he had no clue what the idiot cop was saying. This shouldn't even a be a issue of him turning and respecting the law he didn't break a law.

I think the issue is that seems a large number of American police have a hard time exercising appropriate judgement. Maybe the victim shouldn't have been turning away, but an officer of the law should be able to determine that the guy can't understand you at all, that if you need to hold/restrain him you probably don't need to do a UFC takedown on a fragile old man who is little to no physical threat. I have a hard time seeing how this situation couldn't have been resolved with a little bit of a rational approach. What happened to police being the best of society? Seems like they hand a badge to any idiot these days.

that's a couple hours from me, thankfully the guy was fired and arrested.

with that being said, many that I've spoke with think that the cop should rot.

He time he turned away was immediately after the cops asked him where he lived or where he was going. He then lifted up his arm, pointed to where he was going and from my view, was going to show them where he lived.

He's from India, maybe dealing with American police isn't common there thus knowing not to walk away like that isn't common sense for him.

He was guilty of walking in a "free" country. The cop had to make sure that breaking the 100lb indian mans neck was the proper way of doing things when his hands are handcuffed behind his back.

"911? Yeah, there's a non-white guy walking down my street. He's walking slowly, and looking at stuff. Can you come arrest him?"

Ridiculously on edge society down there.

This exemplifies so much of what has gone wrong with contemporary policing. What possible explanation can there be for this kind of extreme conduct?

Two officers approaching one, clearly unarmed guy who isn't running or moving quickly in anyway and whose hands appear to be constantly visible? Acknowledging the guy is "from India" and clearly doesn't understand what they're saying? Sending in 'back-up'? Following him for all of about 6 feet before determining they need to subdue him, check, throw him violently to the ground? Come on.

When did the police become at war with the people? And who or what the heck are they protecting in this instance? Terrifying stuff.

I feel like officers need to learn that in general, fragile old men aren't a major threat, unless acting in a threatening way.

This happened in Seattle a few weeks ago:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/m...g-a-golf-club/

Black man is waiting to cross a street with a small bag of groceries in one hand, using a golf club as a walking stick with the other. A female officer loses her mind and tells him to put his "weapon" down.

In some cases, excessive force can be somewhat explained away, but this man was in no way a threat, not even close. Officers really need to be properly trained so they don't completely overreact to non-threats. Maybe then people wouldn't react in such a volatile way when police approach them.

Wow. That video of the black guy and his golf club really illustrates racism in America. How sad.

Can't add too much more than what has already been said, but I hope this fund that is being set up for the man's care becomes fully funded by the police department. His family shouldn't have to bear the burden, and they shouldn't have to rely on the public's generosity. The police screwed up hugely, and I hope that they get sued to hell over it.

Additionally, that guy that made the phone call should hopefully be putting in some money to help out there.

This pretty much sums it up. The guy is saying he does not speak English and they continue to speak to him in English...

Quote:
One officer says, “he’s saying ‘no English.’ ” The second officer continues to ask Patel questions, including “are you looking at houses and stuff?”

Sureshbhai Patel said he tried to tell the officers that he doesn’t speak English by saying “No English. Indian. Walking,” according to the lawsuit. He says he repeated his son’s house number and pointed toward the residence.

In the police video, an officer then tells Patel, “Do not jerk away from me again. If you do, I’m gonna put you on the ground.” The officer asks, “Do you understand?” and tells Patel to “relax.”

It's genuinely scary. The officer accuses him of swinging the golf club at her, but watching the video, at no point does he do such a thing. She entirely fabricates the incident, and it's only because of the video that the truth comes out. Imagine how many such incidents happen outside the frame of a dashcam.

It's also scary how quickly it escalated. Sure, a golf club can be used as a weapon, but it's blatantly obvious that this is just an elderly guy with his groceries using it as a walking stick. It seemed like once she got out of her vehicle, she quickly eliminated backing down as a course of action. Of course, according to the article, she has since been busted for some questionable race related Facebook comments.

It is not often that a video clip will literally make me comment or react out loud, but when I watched that Madison clip and saw the old guy get tossed, my spontaneous reaction was to do so.

That is just so wrong. I hope the officer has the courage to plead guilty.

Sadly odds are he won't and will be found not guilty in the end.
