I think the difference with Bennett as opposed to other players is a) his skill set and b) that he's skated and practiced with the team through this. He's not coming into the fold with no idea of the system and how things work at this level. He's been around the coaches and teammates and probably has done all his homework in preparation. That's why if his conditioning goes well he should be able to jump into this roster. At least for a handful of games.

Send him to the O and let him get some games then bring him up to the Flames after the junior season is done.

But if that doesn't happen I am okay with it. I am sure management knows what's best.

I hope he agrees to an AHL stint but I wouldn't be upset at all if he went back to junior

I think if he can do 10 chin ups in a row, we give him 9 games

It is an interesting conversation though. The way I see it if the flames feel he should play in at least a couple of games this season there is two ways it could work out.

Option A:
Flames take seven days till he is cleared to play on the 21st, Sam is sent down for a 2 week conditioning stint and plays in Addy until trade deadline day or the two week stint is up. Because they active roster limit is lifted on deadline day the Flames are free to call him up without sending someone down, get him in some games and evaluate from there.

Option B:
Flames ultimately decide Sam is better off in junior for now whether it is before or after a conditioning stint in the A. Sam goes back to Kingston for their playoff drive and Kingston makes the playoffs. Now Kingston is currently in 7th in the East, 13 points out of fourth so they will most likely meet one of the the better teams in the OHL's eastern conference. This could lead to a first round exit just due to the competition they're facing. Last year the OHL's first round ended 15 days after the last regular season game. With the regular season ending on Mar. 22 this year that means assuming Kingston doesn't make it past the first round Sam would be available for call up between April 1st if they are swept or April 6th if the go to 7 games. That leaves a max of 5 regular season games Sam could get into if he goes back to the OHL.

I feel like just due to the way dates and schedules would work out that if the Flames feel he should finish his season in the NHL it would be best if he doesn't go back to the OHL. I guess the Flames situation at the end of the season will also play a big role in it, but I don't think its a recipe for success if he plays his first games right at the end of the season when we will hopefully be right in the final push of our playoff push.

Having Bennett in addy might be a boost for them too.

This is an 18 year old coming off a significant procedure.

I think some people have unrealistic expectations of his impact right now.

I'm thinking something along these lines:

OHL to finish the season.

Then one of 2 scenarios:

1) If the Flames are still playing hockey when Kingston is eliminated from the OHL playoffs, Sam gets his cup of coffee then (last couple games of the season or a round or 2 of the playoffs ).

2) If the Flames aren't playing hockey then (long Kingston playoff run coupled with Calgary early exit ) Sam is assigned to Adirondack for what is hopefully a long playoff run, developing chemistry with Baertschi, Poirier and all our other Backburner heroes.

There's a linear progression there that makes more sense than the floated AHL conditioning stint idea. This way Sam's 9 NHL games could be useful at the end of the season if we're involved in a playoff push, and he would have been eased back into playing in his familiar OHL surroundings. As tempting as it is to play with the new shiny toy, I just don't think it's what's best for his development.

If he does stick with the Flames I'd be really excited to watch him. I'm prepared to trust Treliving's decision.

if he is practicing in calgary by the time he plays an NHL game he will be game ready, their practices are pretty much games.

There's an unfortunately decent chance none of Calgary, adirondack or Kingston make the playoffs

Obvious there is a chance of course, but Kingston and Calgary both are in a playoff spot currently and Adirondack are one point out. So theres a decent chance all of them make it!

I'd prefer him to go down to junior for this season though. He could get in the last dozen or so games for the Frontenacs, maybe move up a couple spots and they could end up 5th in the conference. He'd be a major boost for them and it would be meaningfull games right away.

He said that Cox is reporting that he would be going back to Kingston.

However it sounds like he is misquoting Cox

@DamoSpin: Sam Bennett cleared for contact today by CGY. Still see him heading back to Kingston in 10 days or so. Fronts sure could use him.
