In the renderings for the new development across 8th St. from Mount Royal Village &16th Ave SW, they show a "food market," that looks similar to a Whole Foods layout.
Wasn't Northland Village supposed to be essentially bulldozed to the ground and rebuilt? Not to say that WF couldn't go in there, I'm just curious - I haven't been there in eons.
Northland would be such a booming location if the ctrain station was right there and a residential project like university city was there. Brentwood and Westbrook are the trashiest malls in Calgary yet will come around because of the train and residential being developed around those sites. Replace all of the dealerships around northland with condo projects and the mall will thrive.
Only place I can think of that this will work is the old Target location in Signal Hill. That is totally their target audience, and there is a building there to boot.
I've been to Whole Foods a few times in the States.
Never bought groceries there so I can't comment on that, but I'm a big fan of the hot food section. Really good quality, reasonable prices, and lots of variety. Wander around, fill your container and head over to the seating section.
Plus, they have a great selection of beers and wine if you want a drink with your meal.
Kind of like a big huge Sunterra but way better.
It's it a great alternative to typical fast food or a proper sit-down place if you want a quick meal.
The Sears in North Hill Mall would be a good location for them, and Sears is probably willing to sell. (They own their land, so I doubt Safeway would be able to veto another grocer).

Are you kidding? North Hill mall is where dreams go to die. They need at least six more dollar stores in that place.

I can't explain it but North Hill is extremely busy, compared to Northland. Parking is hard to find. It must have something to do with all the medical offices there, not the shops.

It doesn't really matter if the mall they might end up in is dead and lacking life. Stores like Whole Foods are "destinations", so whether it be Northland, North Hill, etc., it won't really matter. People will flock to it if it is easy to get to.
With separate entrances being a guarantee, the quality of the mall itself is irrelevant. If it is even in a mall.
At least all the pro-diseasers will be in the same place.
I initially thought your connection was a bit harsh. But my resident Facebook acquaintance anti-vaxxer/pro-diseaser has taken a break from her crusade to rave about Whole Foods coming to Calgary. That's enough evidence for me.
I see a lot of comments here where people have completely made up their minds. It's truly unfortunate that nobody here will think about the poor diseases! Will no one defend the diseases!
Following the recent outbreak of measles at Disneyland, Jason Millman, a reporter for The Washington Post's Wonkblog, called out "the anti-vaccination movement" in a January 22 post, describing them as "over-privileged group of rich people" who "overwhelmingly" voted for Obama. Millman repeated the observation "that you only had to go visit a Whole Foods to find anti-vaxxers."
This itself is a fallacy. Didn't Chris Christie come out a few weeks back supporting anti-vaxx? How about Rand Paul? Were they doing that to speak to their base or the ones that would never vote for them?
What is with people having to paint a societal problem as a political issue? Anti-Vaxx is a stupidity issue which covers both sides of the spectrum.
I had a laugh that the article mentioned even Slate has started to run pro-vaxx articles. Slate a liberal online magazine has been at the forefront of the pro-vaxx movement for a while now. It constantly calls out all politicians that spout anti-vaxx non-sense.
I know it's easier for our minds to process when things are black or white, but come on I thought we were smarter than this. By doing this we are letting equally stupid rich conservatives off the hook.
If Whole Foods directly as a company promotes anti-vaxx fine. I very much doubt every customer walking in the door agrees with them, and/or are "selfish liberals" with diseased kids. Some just want their tasty grass fed unicorn steak that costs a fortune to feed to their kids because it tastes good, and they can/want to promote a healthier way to farm.
Just tired of every issue having to be positioned as a political one. Stupid is stupid.

Christie was supporting the right to choose rather than anti-vax. Which would be the general republican stance on all issues accept abortion and gay rights.
Another choice for the consumer. Sounds good to me. Can't wait to check it out.
Calgary's grocery market is getting really crowded. With Save on Foods moving in, Safeway/Sobeys, Superstore/Shoppers Drug Mart, Co-op, Sunterra, Walmart's continued move into super centres, Costco, and all the independent players, etc., I wonder if there'll be a big consolidation soon.
I'm amazed Co-op is still around. I suspect they'll get gobbled up someday, especially in this cut--throat market . . . I've been saving that for a decade, mind.
