If anyone fancies seeing a Cathay Pacific Cargo 747-800 in daylight today is your chance, it's late from JFK and enroute to us right now. ETA is 1046:

They originally filed like that for some reason. A controller in Winnipeg saw it and fixed it by clearing them direct some point west of the border.

Perhaps they forgot to check for rats before heading across Alberta border. That must be it.

Avgeek test time, Alaska is changing their livery. Can you spot the differences between the current and new one? New is on top:

Real picture of the new livery.
Same plane, but old livery(and winglets).

I'm still amazed that those winglets provide a significant increase in efficiency.

So I have entered the avgeek kingdom of Flightradar24 on my iPhone so I can see what's flying around at any given moment. Interesting app.
I upgraded it to get the custom alerts. What are some suggestions for alerts for the YYC area that might yield something cool? What are some of the alerts that "real" avgeeks have set to catch rare and unexpected stuff?

I'm always scanning for one of the following aircraft types, in order of how rare a YYC visit would be.
A388
A225
A350
A124
B748
B789
B788
Tail numbers:
C-GWSZ is WestJet's Disney plane, always a joy.
N76516 is a United 737-800 in Star Alliance colours with split scimitars. Looks good.
C-GCNO is the new Canadian North plane with all the CFL logos on it, though tracking might not work on that guy.
That's all I got off the top of my head.

I'm pretty much a copy of Acey's list of types of aircraft I have alerts set up for on Flightaware and that I scan for on Flightradar when I have time.
I would also add:
DC10
MD11
However a lot of the real rare birds are usually not trackable on these sites and you have to have some people in the know at the airport to give you a heads up.

Many thanks. I don't live near the airport anymore (grew up in Beddington though), but I occasionally take my son to watch the planes, so this will certainly give us a few extra excuses to do it!

I know the weather isn't exactly forecast as great tomorrow, but the Nav Canada CRJ will be doing its inspection passes on the new runway during the day. Pretty cool to go watch them come in nice and fast with the gear up and peel away at the threshold.

A tweet from Qualico homes today:
Quote:
Milestone day for us! The first home is being dug in the new community of Harmony today in Springbank.
|
And my reply:
This development is right up against Springbank airport (YBW). You just know these new residents are going to move in and start bitching about airplane noise right away. When the weather is good YBW is busy all day long with training flights coming and going and flying in the circuit practicing takeoffs and landings (plus the helicopter training traffic).
For reference:
