I assume Jets fans are pretty excited about this deal? Yeah it sucks to lose Kane but most had to realize it was going to happen and to get the 1st round pick, two former 1st round picks, as well as Myers has to feel pretty good for two players that had kind of run their course with the organization. Getting Kane off the team alone should remove that dark cloud that has followed them since moving from Atlanta.

If only the Phaneuf trade had turned out like this.

I think this trade will work out for both teams. I think the Jets should be happy about this and if Kane can go the Buffalo and kind of start over, this trade might look great for Buffalo as well. I am skeptical at this point that will happen but I think this for example was a better return than the flames got for Dion.

Phaneuf was dealt by himself so it's not quite the same but he should have brought back the prospects and late 1st round pick at the very least. Sucks but always makes for a good cautionary tale for the new guys running the show.

Winnipeg gets the prospects and a first rounder which remains to be seen how good those players are in the NHL, however they do seem like good young players at this point, and Winnipeg has done good job at player development. I give the edge to the Jets but Buffalo has a slew of good young talent and potentially Connor McDavid/Eichel coming to them as well, their future looks good, but we all know that young prospects isn't everything re. Oilers.
Buffalo should learn a lesson in not to follow the Oilers development. They have young centre Sam Reinhart and maybe McDavid/Eichel, and maybe Kasdorf will be a good player. Zach Bogosian is not old yet and maybe Evander Kane will work out for the Sabres. Imagine Kane playing on the line with Reinhart or McDavid. Then the youg guys will have a mixture of some veteran players like Josh Gorges, Brian Gionta and others. Winnipeg's future will be good too.

The general vibe I'm getting and share is were bummed to lose bogo (not too bummed tho) but thrilled about Myers, very excited about Lemieux and Armia, and loving the late 1st this year with our drafting record. Stafford is a big meh piece for me. He's only coming in with half the salary being paid though, and so he's not a big cap hit and helps an immediate void.

I think Kane is horrendously over rated and will never reach his prime of 30 goals per season regularly.. and is a locker room child. So in that context chevy hit a grand slam.

For this deal Buffalo vs Winnipeg: each team did really well. A truly great hockey deal imo.

I'd thought jets fans would be smarter than that

Pretty clear to say that the flames would have needed to give up Bennett ++++ to be in this.

The thoughts of Baertschi and Backlund being enough were silly.
If we had to give up Bennett then Buffalo would have had to Sam Reinhart. They did not.

it's funny, i think the sabres gave up a lot, but at the same time, i don't think it's a 'bad deal' for them.

they get a solid young winger who needed to get out of his situation, and a big, top4 dman already at the age of 24. the fact that kane is getting surgery, is even better as it allows them to continue their journey to mcdavid/eichal.

I like the move for the sabres. They have TONS of assets, like it's unreal. Instead of waiting till the youth start contributing and then spending assets, they are already looking at improving as early as next year by bringing in NHL players of value with those assets today.

Good for Stafford to FINALLY get out of that black hole.

Part of me thinks Winnipeg really wanted to dump Kane in the worst possible place too..which makes me laugh. Have fun toiling in the basement, Kane.

How could you forget Freddy Sojstrom?

But in all seriousness, Sutter should have gotten a similar package for Phaneuf. Potential upgrades in the short term and long term assets.

One can repress the memory I guess.

i am glad that the phanuef trade was brought up. it should be mentioned in every trade thread regardless of the teams involved.

it should also be noted that wayne gretzky, arguably the best hockey player ever, was once traded - so any player can be traded

It is the Sabres choice. So they will give up which ever one is later.
