But honestly, who cares about that stupid Bennett "rumour". It didn't happen and there's simply no way Treliving would have done it anyway, so why even debate it?

First I've heard of the Bennett rumour. Was responding to people saying Bennett>Buffalo package, which is crazy IMO.

There was a post earlier about whoever turns it around, Kane or Myers, will determine the winner of this trad which I fully agree with. Myers has Norris potential, Kane has 30-40 goal power forward potential. Stafford is crap and has been the whipping boy among Sabres fans for three years, Armia could be something. Only piece I'm not liking going the other way is Brendan Lemieux, I really liked that pick. The late 1st isn't too huge... We'll have another late 1st and will have the first pick in the second round too.
Lol at everyone who thought we'd given up our first rounder in the deal.
|
Complete nonsense.
Winnipeg is a winner no matter what happens with Kane and Myers. They've already moved on.
If Kane turns his life around then, yeah, the trade could be good for Buffalo too, but to insinuate that anything positive has to happen with Myers for the Jets to be better for this trade is to completely ignore why the trade was made in the first place.

no you are crazy, late 1st rounders and players who's games have fallen off a cliff are not worth a top end prospect ranked #1 by many

McKenzie indicated that the Jets would want Bennett in return for Kane.
And again, Bennett is a stud prospect who plays a far more important position than all of Kane, Armia and Lemieux. Call it "crazy" all you want, but it's not surprising that people feel that way. Just think of it that way: if you were Treliving, would you accept Armia + Lemieux + a late 1st for Bennett? I certainly wouldn't. I would laugh at the other GM.

Buffalo gets a goalscorer who now has a chip on his shoulder (pun intended) and will be playing next to a star centre when they draft McDavid or Eichel. They give up Myers for Bogosian, which may be a downgrade if Myers recovers, but is likely a wash, they give up a prospect who would not sign anyway (Lemeiux) and a good prospect (Armia) and a 1st, likely in the 20-30 range. They shed some of Stafford's salary to end the year and they get a goalie prospect.
Sure, they give a lot, but in their situation of having a lot of assets and needing to add some major upside, this deal could end up being a win. For me, it comes down to:
Armia vs Kane - who is the better forward going ahead
Myers vs Bogosian - who sticks in a top 3/4 role and lives up to draft billing?
Then it is a matter of speculating what other trade value Buffalo could have gotten out of a rental in Stafford, a future holdout in Lemeiux, and the late first.
Kasdorf as a return may be what they get for a rental of Stafford - goalie prospect who has had 1 good year, then lost most of a year and now is a question mark.
That breaks the deal down to
Kane for Armia, Lemeiux and a 1st
Bogosian for Myers
Kasdorf for Stafford (2M retained)

What exactly does Kane offer over Backlund? Two years of age and the potential for maybe 10-15 more points?
In Backlund we have a guy who can play a shut down center role against the best players in the league, a guy who can put up points, a leader and a guy who loves playing here.
Backlunds pace: 0.58 PPG
Kanes pace: 0.59 PPG
I'll take Backlund EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
|
As said prior, Kane is an elite scoring talent with size, power, lacking attitude, maturity and perhaps some work ethic. Backlund is the opposite - nothing wrong with that, but it's why that rare talent is valued by many teams.

People clearly haven't watched Myers since 2012 then, he's a solid defense men with loads of potential still.
But that's your opinion and I have no desire to try and change your mind.

Not really, no.
None of the prospects are in the same stratosphere as Bennett and all the roster players are either garbage (Stafford) or have huge question marks (Myers).
Adding a bunch of half decent players/prospects doesn't improve the quality of the package. It just ends up being a whole bunch of meh. It's like the Flames packaging Backlund, Bouma, Wideman and Ramo for a player and then saying "the Penguins would probably have needed to do Crosby+++ to match that package"

you sure about that? I can gurantee any talk of Sam would have been a very short conversation from the Flames side
Myers has been FAR from solid

Has he shown to be any more elite of a scoring talent than Backlund so far? His ppg is a little better but it's not like he's at a different level. It's not like he's Patrick.
He's 23 and has been in the league for a while. Time to stop relying on potential and start showing up to play. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's a bad player on the ice. I just wouldn't trade Backlund for him.

And that wasn't even a rumour. McKenzie made up (a) the Flames' interest (b) the asking price by Winnipeg (being Bennett) and (c) the Flames wouldn't do it. The last part at least is correct.

So is Kane just going to be labeled an Elite talent for his entire career or is there some point where he's actually going to have to back it up?

Absolutely not. You sound like someone who saw his rookie year and then stopped paying attention. He's an "ok" defenseman who is big.
