In 1986, it was almost impossible to miss the playoffs. 5 out of 21 teams.

Now it is 14 out of 30.

The bruins had a 10 game losing streak in 2009/2010 - worked out pretty well for them...

Hawks lost 9 in 2010-11 and made the POs.

That is true...but it's not like the Flames snuck into the final spot...they finished #6 overall.

I would not say COL is really in the race at 5.2%:

http://www.sportsclubstats.com/NHL/Western.html

I'm prepared to bury DAL too.

If Calgary wins in regulation tonight their odds will be almost 20% higher than the Sharks. A regulation loss would result in 10% lower odds. Big swing for one game.

Slightly different if you insert shot attempt bias rather than history and away/home:

Edit: wrong chart

Big win tonight for the Flames. Flames looking okay as other teams finally start to catch up in games played.

they control their own destiny, which is not something I thought I would be saying at this time of the year.

This is a bizarre graph, and needs a fair bit more context. And this year's version of the Flames in particular have soundly proven that they can stay afloat with poor corsi. Without context I have no idea what exactly this graph is showing, but based on these results when compared to a basic 50/50 chance graph (here) it looks like far too much emphasis has been placed on corsi.

The Wild is riding some serious momentum. Wonder how long it's gonna last?

Is just straight up chances of making the playoffs via a totally "awesome" formula a guy made up using advanced stats to predict playoffs.

When does Dubnyk face the Oilers. Should cause some Pavlov reaction to suckdom?

The Wild will come back to earth just short of catching Vancouver in the standings.

3 teams with the gap the Wild had going into february have made the playoffs in the past 10 years for a reason. You can have as much momentum as you want..until you actually move ahead of the team holding the final seed, it means nothing.

Dubnyk is starting to leak.
