Default Apple TV, Pro Tips Please

So my wife turned up at home yesterday with Apple TV she won at work.

I am going to set it up tonight, and would love any suggestions/Pro Tips.

It comes with a lot of apps that you may find useless. To hide them:

1. Select the icon you want to hide.
2. Hold down the Select button on the remote until the icon starts to jiggle.
3. Press the Play/Pause button for more options.
4. Select Hide This Item.

The remote is sexy but you'll lose it every single day until you die. In the settings you can program a standard remote to work with it. I suggest doing it even if you plan on using the apple remote, just so you have one handy when the stick of gum inevitably goes missing.

There's a remote app you can download to your phone that it infinitely more useable than the remote that comes with it.

Airplay is great.... when it works.

For $100 its a nice little unit. Especially if you stream and watch Netflix a lot.

For US Netflix on an Apple TV you need to open up a US ITunes account. Of all the Netflix interfaces I find Apple TV's as by far the best and it's easy to make a US ITunes account as you just purchase a $25 prepaid Visa and set up an account with a random US address. I just used my dad's Montana Cabin for all my US accounts.

Airplay is great for gatherings when you want people to stream pictures or videos on their phones wirelessly through the TV.

Hmm so setting up unblock-us alone doesn't give you the US library? On the Roku 3 the Netflix app determines which library to show based on that.

Setting your DNS to unblock-us on your router will work just fine even if your AppleTV is set to Canada. If you set your DNS on the actual AppleTV you have to change your region in the appletv settings to US which means you will not be able to rent movies etc without a US itunes account.

Netflix location content is independent of the iTunes store. Unblockus will give you US Netflix

You sure this applies to Apple TV? You realize that the location setting of Apple TV is linked directly to your iTunes account and the only way to change your country is to use an apple account valid for that country. I now get US Netflix on my Apple TV's but the only way I could get it to work was to change my iTunes account to US. I've seen video tutorials where they tell you to just change the country in your iTunes account but you can no longer do that unless you change your iTunes account. This is regarding unhacked Apple TV's as with hacked ones you certainly can.

I am almost 100% sure. Reason I say that is because my Apple TV uses Unblockus and get US Netflix without me fiddling with iTunes store.

Just curious, are you sure you are getting US Netflix? One sure way I found is to search for the documentary "Man on Wire". It's on US Netflix, but not on Canadian.

Absolutely as it's the only way to get Black Mirror which is my new favorite show. I'm not saying that it can't be done but the way I stated was the only way I could get it to work.

I setup this for Netflix on my newer Apple TV and it worked fine (don't recall that I have a US iTunes account), but that was probably a year ago.

I can confirm what others have said : Unblock-Us is all that you need to get US Netflix. Once you toggle your region on Unblock-Us, you just have to exit to the main Apple TV screen and re-enter Netflix.

Yeah, I've got a US iTunes account and a Canadian account. My US account goes on the Apple TV and I typically stream content from my media server rather than use iTunes from the Apple TV.

I don't understand getting US based streaming (Netflix) in Canada. If you have no concerns with being legit, then why not use a TV box and Kodi (previously XBMC) to stream everything instead of the limited Netflix US content.

I do get being legit.
I don't get this.
And this is wrong thread. Sorry OP

Don't want to hijack thread, but quick question:

Do 2nd gen ATVs still hold more value than newer models?
I have one that's just collecting dust and wondering if they can still fetch $200 like they used to.

Sold one a year ago for $200.
With new Android boxes 2-3x more power at somewhere around half that cost, it seems silly... But I believe people will still pay the money for that logo.
