I'd probably just give him the choice of moving his stuff off the other seat, or I sit on it.
Sounds like that's the kind of interaction he's trying to provoke. Then he sues you for breaking whatever is in his bag.
I've long felt we need to set aside somewhere like Coats Island in Hudson Bay as a refuge for misanthropes. If you show you just don't get along well with other human beings, you're dropped off with a year of rations to live in an isolated modular trailer unit, far from any other units. When the year's up, if you want to rejoin humanity you can. But next time your visit will be permanent.

lets admit it - this guy needs a good old fashion public stoning or placed into the town catapault and launched.......presumably if he did get a load of money from the po-po then you'd think that you would be able to track him down via google as i'd assume that there are not that many Canadains who have sued the po-po for large amounts of cash.

Damn I want some resolution. What happened with that guy? Can Calgary Transit arrest guys like him? I'm surprised they didn't remove him from the train.
wow that might be the most ridiculous video i've ever seen, and those transit cops are pussies
I would say they showed an amazing amount of restraint. They are probably not allowed to touch or detain him for failing to provide proof of payment so any contact could be construed as assault and he would very likely sue and win.
####ing ######bag though.

just assumed that transit cops can remove a non paying transit user?
I don't know where that was filmed (not Calgary, I do know that) but it seems like transit officers in Calgary can do it. I've never seen it happen though.
There was a thread on here years ago and one of the posters (who was a cop, IIRC) said something like "they (transit officers) get in fights all the time". I figured that meant that they can take you off the train, and might have to get into a fracas to do so.
Of course this is Canada, and I doubt they run into Constitutional scholars like the guy in the video very often.

A couple of years back I watched a pair of Transit officers double team a guy on the train. He had no valid proof of payment when they got on at Lions Park. He was quite belligerent with them both, making his sob story/F-U/Rent-A-Cop tirade quite audible to everyone in the car. When the doors opened at SAIT he tried to make a run for the door (it was a bad error on his part, both transit officers were built like brick ####houses). One officer dove for the legs and the other grabbed his shoulders and slammed him to the ground. I've never seen a verbal tough guy turn into a wimp so fast. They flipped him over on his stomach to subdue him and then it turned into a youtube video in real life. He was screaming about broken arms and assault and pleading for help from anyone around him. It was quite the visual and audible delight until I got off at Sunnyside. My only regret is that I was having so much fun that I forgot to bust out my iPhone and record it.

I think (in the US) that they have to have proof of lack of payment. The ###### was actually being pretty smart in what he was doing, as he wasn't claiming that he hadn't paid, just that he wasn't going to show it to them. It looked like he had a sort of reloadable card and they wanted to scan it to see if the days fare had been taken off.
So, since they couldn't prove he hadn't paid, they had to be careful, as if they strongarmed him off and it turned out he HAD paid, they'd likely be in some trouble. Notice how things changed after he scanned his thing himself and it looked like he hadn't paid. All the sudden he wasn't interested in refusing to show proof of purchase, but was now demanding a video review to show that he had paid earlier.
It's a tricky situation, and one has to be pretty careful when dealing with "rules lawyers" like that, as you never know what sort of situation is going to happen, but you can be sure that it'll be recorded and broadcast as far as possible by the video maker. Any HINT of less than 100% amazingly stellar patience when dealing these guys will be spun out into an "abuse of authority" issue on youtube without fail.
