Sounds like the it's still very proto-type like right now. Wouldn't expect much for a while since Microsoft needs to optimise hardware (removed all the wires and reduce weight) and develop software.

It's good to see Microsoft stepping up its game and start innovating, try new projects rather than just incrementing on what they have. Really like a lot of things coming out from them lately.
I think VR/AR will be taking some big steps soon with the Occulus expected to have retail ready units soon and Google showing what Magic Leap is. I'm sure Apple is working on something in this field also.

That's great, but it doesn't mean he should present it.

I kind of had the opposite thought. If they let such a stereotypical geek/nerd present it, they must think they have a pretty awesome product. The slick guys always have me tuning out a minute or two in.

Really interesting that they are going to give Windows 10 away for the first year, that should get a lot of people upgrading from XP to Windows 7 or 8.1 for the free upgrade.

Just in case anyone is considering this, I would hold off. With the new Microsoft licensing model, any Windows key you purchase is only good for that very specific version, so say you buy Windows 7 or 8 and upgrade it in the future to Windows 10. If you ever want to re-install Windows 10 (in case of an infection, hardware failure, etc) you'll need to install Windows 7/8 again first before being able to get back to Windows 10. You'd be better off just waiting until 10 releases and buying it directly instead
Plus if they follow the Windows 8 release model, they're likely to have a half off sale when 10 comes out to drive upgrades even more

^ Maybe I'm a tech noob but I don't frequently (ever?) have to re-install windows... is this something people do often?

Is that new? I've never had to do that. I have upgrade versions since Windows XP and if I ever have to do a clean install I just install the newest version first without a key (which gives a trial) and then reinstall with the key which does an upgrade.
Totally stupid to have to do that, but it works.

I do it once a week. But that's mainly because I enjoy watching status bars.

Yeah one of my upgrade copies just asks me to put in an old windows dvd to verify, I keep a full version of Win98 on hand just for that.

I know if you try to do a clean install of Windows 8.1 with a Windows 8 key, it won't let you. You'll need to install Windows 8 and then do the 8.1 upgrade through the Microsoft Store after

It's much less of an issue these days than it used to be (where a yearly format/reinstall was good practice), but it's nice to do in a disaster recovery case

Anyone know if they'll have various versions of 10? similar to 7, such as the Home, Pro, Enterprise, Ultimate licenses? If they do, I wonder if they'll match the license to the version you have if you choose the free upgrade options.

They'll likely use the same model they used for Windows 8, only having three versions. Standard, Pro, and Enterprise. And I imagine the free upgrade path will only apply to the standard and pro editions, as giving away Windows 10 to every business that owns a Windows 7 license would be a massive chunk of cash gone

Well, since many companies are on volume licensing for the OS itself with annual payments, I would be pretty surprised if Microsoft didn't offer "free" upgrades on Enterprise as well.

If you have Software Assurance, you get the upgrade included.
