Baird is currently in a position to collect a $100,000-plus pension when he reaches 55 years of age. Under new MP pension rules, if Baird had sought re-election again this year, he wouldn’t be able to collect that sum until age 65.
What a goofy rule. It would seem to encourage politicians to pack it in - even the good ones. I must be missing something.

Yeah, it means he'll make an extra $1M+ in life-long earnings (above and beyond what he'll earn in the private sector) if he leaves politics now vs. if he waited until he was 65. That's a pretty strong incentive to encourage anyone to get out of public service.
