IIRC, he can't go to the A because of his age.

NHL or OHL are the options.

No one here is saying sending Bennett back to JR's is a bad idea. Seems like a few are just not as open minded about possibilities of Bennett getting 9 games in CGY or a stint in the AHL before that decision is made.

I too like Kerr find is very suspect that Treliving is keeping it a secret they're sending Bennett back to Juniors. Why keep it secret? If it was the only way Bennett was going to play hockey this year then no reason to shroud it in mystery. no, the fact that the Flames are keeping things that close to the chest tells me the decision is not so black and white for them or Bennett.

He may eventually end up back in the OHL but I think he's going to make them give him his shot fist.

Pretty sure he can go on a conditioning stint, but after that two week period it is either NHL or OHL.

Returning players fro Injury can in fact go to the AHL for a conditioning stint.

Even 18 yr olds?

I thought the issue, was at 18 he can't play in the AHL.

Yes, even as an 18 yo. we ironed this out a couple of weeks ago. I thought the same thing (ish).

Cannot play ful time in the AHL but conditioning stint for two weeks is okay. cannot be a permanent thing. Also, I don't think the rule applies to internationally drafted 18 year olds either. Only CHL prospects.

Cheers, I will put that down to vacation brain.

Thanks,

If that is the case, if he rips it up during the conditioning stint, I might consider bringing him up.

The "can he play in the AHL" question has probably been answered nearly 20 times in this thread so far.

I don't think it will be the last.

My default is to send him to junior, because it's the least risky thing. I'm open to the possibility of NHL. I don't think much is gained in the AHL for conditioning, frankly. Even though it's pro, and even though they try and teach Flames systems, it's a different, more wide open game, and there are some real goons there. He probably knows Flames systems pretty well from being off ice here and from the practices he's now joining.

Last year I figured Monahan for juniors but by game 5 I'd changed my mind, so I'm not inflexible about it.

So I am looking at rough time frame here. He practices till mid february with the Flames, then he went to the AHL for a conditioning stint for two weeks, that would take him to the first week in March. The Frontenacs are currently in seventh place with some games in hand. If they don't make the playoffs they are done March 21. He could get 10 games with the Flames in March, and it would basically take him to the end of the Frontenacs season, making him elligible to play playoffs for either NHL or AHL. He could also get sent down, and again if they don't make the playoffs, he could be back in the AHL shortly. Flames have lots of options to see how this all pans out.

To me the dressing room issue that is being mentioned makes the most sense from the perspective of sending him down, and it carries more weight for sending him down than the speculation about him not being physically ready.

I still don't think they're going to send him back to junior right away. My money is on an AHL stint and they'll evaluate him for a few games at that level and then make a decision, taking all of the arguments from this thread into account.

It might be fun to see him play for a couple of weeks with his future right winger, Emile Poirier.

Darren Haynes with by far the most in-depth and logical analysis of the situation:

http://flamesfrom80feet.blogspot.ca/...o-and-may.html

I wasn't aware that he could be assigned to the AHL once his OHL season is complete. Theoretically he could go back to Kingston then be assigned to the AHL for playoffs with Adirondack and it wouldn't burn any of his precious 9 games.

In another scenario where the NHL Flames happened to make the post season, Sam could join the team after Kingston is eliminated from the OHL playoffs and burn up to 9 games in the NHL playoffs without ELC-maggedon kicking in.

This is all good news. Once he's healthy he needs to play as much hockey as he can for the rest of the season. He could theoretically be involved in 3 playoff runs (OHL, NHL & AHL) depending on how far each team goes.

My gut feeling is that Sam plays in a handful of Calgary Flames games, but spread out over a few months. AHL conditioning stint then 1 or 2 NHL games, followed by assignment to Kingston for the remainder of the season. OHL playoffs where they get knocked out in the 1st round. Then assignment to the NHL for the last 1 or 2 games of the season. If Calgary makes the playoffs he could suit up for a handful of games, and once they're eliminated he could join Adirondack for their Calder Cup run. It's hectic, but it salvages an otherwise wasted season developmentally. Kid would get A LOT of competitive hockey in be for the summer...

Well if you watch the Treliving video, he talks about where he's 'going' and since that's the case there are two choices, Glens Falls or Kingston. I'm not saying he can't start in Calgary right away but that seems to be not in their plans, so we are eliminating one option.

He could also be 'going' to join the big club. It eliminates nothing.

Yeah, while I think Bennett should and will be returned to juniors you can't make anything out of that comment by Treliving.
