I just pulled the trigger on buying the 7 pc set of 5-Star knives from Kitchen Stuff Plus... http://www.kitchenstuffplus.com/8510...-Set-of-7.aspx#

Since I already have the 7" Santoku (which I got for free from Safeway and is not included in this set), I'll be saving up my stamps to get the scissors (which also does not come with the set).

I'll probably try and get the bamboo storage block from Safeway too. It holds 7 knives + scissors and sharpening steel, whereas the set from Kitchen Stuff Plus only comes with a block that holds 5 knives + scissors and sharpening steel.

I'll guess I'll use the Kitchen Plus block to store the mishmash of other knives that I have.

Why spend more than $200 on a car when a 1981 Toyota Tercel will get you where you need to go just fine.

Just like the knives, it may barely do the job, but it won't do it as well, or in any sort of comfort, speed or style.

Thus the Japanese knives will stay sharper, longer but the German knives are easier to maintain without having them professionally sharpened.

Also, from what I have seen, the German knives tend to be less expensive.

I doubt I can get (I may be wrong though) a Japanese set of: 4" Paring Knife / 5" Utility Knife / 6" Slicing Knife / 8" Chef's Knife / 8" Bread Knife / 9" Sharpening Steel / Wooden Block, for $239.99.... plus I already have the matching 7" Santoku that I got for free from Safeway.

For me, it comes down to price. I'm not willing to pay $400+ for a set of 5 knives c/w sharpening steel & block, whereas $239.99 is acceptable to me, particularly when the quality is good.
Pretty much. Harder, Japanese blade's are thin and razor sharp, they'll cut softer fruits and fish better, I like to view it as a surgeons scalpel. They're a precision tool, you're not going to be chopping down a tree with it. But it won't tolerate heavy use and it'll chip very easily.
German blades are like an axe. Thick, soft blade, you can beat on it and a quick swipe with a steel or pass on a stone will bring it back to life immediately (Very easy care) It'll cut anything you damn well please, and do it well, but might not ideal or something like a tomato.

Honestly, my favourite is probably the middle ground in a Victorinox (Switzerland). Often overlooked because they're on the cheaper side on knives, but the quality is certainly there. As the name implies, these things are like swiss army knives. Thin enough to slice with little effort, heavy enough to take advantage of the forward/cutting/pushing motion, easy to care for while still having good blade retention, and the handle's are great.

I use a mixture of Victorinox and Wusthof knives, both professionally and at home.

I've gotten the Santoku knife and the vegetable knife so far to fill in holes on my Wustof Classic set. My only complaint on the Henckels knives are the handles, as they kind of feel like cheap plastic to me. The blades however is pretty good.

We picked the bread knife. Nothing spectacular. Would not pay $100+ for it, but since we go to Safeway anyway, what the hell. The blade is decent, but the handle is plastic and doesn't have much weight to it.

I have 21 stamps to give away if anyone wants them.
The original person who wanted them now has enough.
I PM'd Otto-Matic, but haven't heard back,so if he doesn't get back to me in a day or two, and anyone else needs them, they're all yours.

Ended up with the Santoku, Slicing and Paring knives out of the promotion. Very pleased so far. I have a 7-piece Victorinox set I bought online about 7-8 years ago and these new tools compliment and fill in the gaps in my collection.

Just hit enough for the bread knife, which I do not have one of, so I'm happy.

I've been noticing for the past few weeks they're getting quite relaxed with how they hand these things out. I ended up with 30 on a $175 shop last week.

Yeah, go pick out your knife from the in-store display, and take it to customer service.

Got the 8" Chef's knife the other day. Haven't cut anything with it yet.

Have 35 stamps - if anyone wants to donate 35 more I can get the paring knife!

Coop did the exact stamps for knives promo about 15 years ago. Got me a sweet Oneida butter knife. All metal, no plastic.

We need 36 stamps to get our first knife, if you still have any to spare.

If you are holding onto cards looking to cash them in, I would suggest doing it sooner then later. I went to pick up the last of the knives for my collection and the display was fairly picked over and 4 other people were standing there looking to pick them up as well.

Thanks to a ton of family helping me collect the stamps, I managed to get 5 of the knives, the sharpening steel and then cashed in some airmiles to pick up the bamboo block (it was 350 and they send you a certificate to pick up the block). I've now got a small professional knife set that I've wanted for the last 10 years.

Was not impressed with the insubstantial handle.
