Also, a team not making the playoffs (Leafs) won't want to trade for Glencross

This is what I like to here from Treliving. There's no rush to get a rebuild. Building the Flames up properly IS the only way to go. If the team makes it into the playoffs, great! But if their chances start to slip at any time, be prepared to tank (at least I hope they will). Either way is a win-win situation for the Flames, more so the latter if they want to draft for better players for the future. I'd like to see them sell towards the trading deadline.

Our deadline moves might be getting the franchise Sam Bennett in the lineup.
This team is coming together kind of like the blackhawks did, and it will only get better by holding on to our assets.

Just because they aren't interested in rental players doesn't mean they won't trade picks for older players. Every GM does it. They already traded a 3rd for Bollig
Sutter didn't believe in rental players either

More interesting to me from that article is that Hanzal might be available and at a cheaper price than Vermette

Have people seen the most recent FlamesNation article yet? Just a look at some of the D-men Calgary could look at besides Cody Franson who was mentioned in OP as a possible target.
The ones that were suggested at FN that I'm particularly interested in -
HURRICANES, Andrej Sekera, 6'0" 201, shoots left, age 28, 1 goal 14 assists = 15 points in 47 games played, -7
SENATORS, Patrick Wiercioch, 6'5" 206, shoots left, age 24, 1 goal 3 assists = 4 points in 27 games played, +4
FLYERS, Michael Del Zotto, 6'0" 195, shoots left, age 24, 5 goals 12 assists = 17 points in 39 games played, -5
FLYERS, Braydon Coburn, 6'5" 220, shoots left, age 29, 1 goal 5 assists = 6 points in 31 games played, -1

Coburn has been on my radar for years, but I heard somewhere (can't remember, so don't ask me to source it), that he's had a few injuries that have derailed his ability to be mobile. Besides which, he suffered a broken foot a couple weeks ago and won't be around for another 2-4 weeks.
Sekera is a good option, but would likely cost a lot since Carolina is looking to get draft picks and prospects back, which we are not willing to part with.

Whatever happens, you can be sure that previous management would have done it better.

Hockey trades, yes.
Trading away pending UFAs, maybe.
Rentals? For the love of God, no.

A Franson-Wotherspoon bottom pairing is all kinds of awesome to me.
But, picks are not movable assets to Treliving this year so any deal they make will be expiring contracts and players they've deemed not a part of the process going forward.
Deadline will be interesting for Calgary. Could see a whole bunch o nothing happen.

If you traded a 2nd for Franson, you'd have to make it conditional on his agreeing to sign with us. Otherwise, why bother.

I would be ok with some moves similar to what Sutter did in 04, bringing in Simon and Nieminen for spare parts and late round picks. But I'd rather hold on to the early round picks and even bubble prospects.
If anything they should be looking at piecing guys off if the offers are right. Specifically Glencross.
Like, if he can find a Nieminen type player for a Jason Morgan type prospect, pull that trigger.

This team is not a buyer in the sense they are flipping picks and prospects for 30 year old pending UFA's. I do think they are still in the mode of taking a big contract for cheap or an asset in return. I also think they will be looking at hockey trades, deals that work now and in the future.

I really hope Treliving stays away from trading with Toronto. Just don't.

Not interested in Phaneuf, Richards or Iginla. I'm excited by the group of young guys coming up, wouldn't want to lose any for an older rental. Good hockey trade is fine- trade for another up and coming young D , but don't gut the future to do that.

Yep no good happens when trading with Toronto. still crying over the Gilmour trade and Dion was a cluster, still pissed Sutter didn't do a better job in shopping him for a better return.
