Default Flames unwilling to risk future for playoff push

http://www.tsn.ca/trade-talk-flames-...-push-1.197646

Quote:
[Calgary Flames general manager Brad Treliving is not willing to risk his team's long-term future for a playoff push this season.
The Flames currently hold the second and final wild card spot and hold a three point advantage over the Los Angeles Kings. Still, Treliving said the Flames remain focused on the future and are not prepared to pay for rental players.
Also mentions that the rumoured price for Franson is a 2nd rounder. If true, Treliving should be knocking on their door. Would fit in nicely as #4-6.

I also think it is good, if by risking the future they mean trading high round draft picks or top prospects. If we can add some decent parts using later round picks or prospects that have become redundant in our system but might have value to another team, then I wouldn't mind something like that.

Franson is an upcoming UFA though. If we're not paying for rentals, why would we pay for a rental?

Just stay the course. If anything, we'd be sellers at the deadline.

Changes are we would make the trade, and sign him to an extension.

Kinda torn on Franson. I liked him in Nashville, but I think he's been underwhelming in Toronto. Also is looking to get a big pay raise I think and has rejected the Leafs offers to retain him. BUT, he does have many of the attributes this defense group needs to be more complete: size, RH shot, offensive abilities. I worry about his defensive abilities, but if Hartley can get Wideman to be halfway decent then I think he can get something out of Franson.

Anyone else intrigued enough in Franson to part with a 2nd round pick?

Probably the easiest place and time a GM could have to make a call like this. The Flames have over-performed so highly that I think most everyone in Calgary is happy to pass on a serious playoffs push for a bright future.

Yeah I imagine Burke has the inside on him so the Flames interest or lack of will be telling on if they think he's going to be worth what will be likely a high asking price in free agency.

This is good to hear.

Even from a win-now standpoint, a lot of this years success can be attributed to prospects stepping up. It should be up to them where this season leads, not up to rental veterans.

Brad Treliving appears to be a smart man.

Good stuff.

You try to re-sign him. I don't think he'd be too opposed to signing a long term deal with the Flames.

He's excatly the type of guys we should be going after. Can help now, but is still young enough to be part of the future.

Gio - Brodie
Russel - Franson
Wotherspoon - Wideman.

I'd think that would be a very d-core. Trade the spares - Diaz, Smid, Engelland...

I am not 100% on getting Franson now for a pick. To be worth it, he would have to be the difference between making/missing the playoffs, or 1st round/2nd round exit.
Does he win the Flames a playoff round?
If not, the team could wait until he is UFA.

With the scarcity of defenceman on the market, his agent will want him to hold out to UFA, as the bidding war will drive his price up - it would be up to the Flames then to see if he is worth adding then.

According to reports he has already turned down 4.6M, if he's going UFA he'll probably be looking north of 5M/season, someone will pay him, it shouldn't be us.

This is all still pure, sweet gravy.

The playoffs are a bonus.

Smart move. Playoffs will happen when they happen. Not all the key pieces are on the team year (Bennett) and not all have developed into what we think they'll be (Monahan, Gaudreau, Bennett). Once those guys are ready to lead the team, THEN start trading picks and prospects for more immediate help and depth for a playoff push.

We're a couple years away from worrying about that. If playoffs happen this year, yay, but we're not necessarily poised for a deep run anyway.

Exactly what I want to hear from management.

Frankly if they don't do anything this trade deadline I'll be alright. Maybe trade Glencross for picks if he waives his NTC. Wouldn't be against trading one of the goalies either since Ortio is clearly ready for 1a/b duties.

Definitely want to be more on the sellers side than the buyers side. Playoffs would be nice but patience is important.

Perfect!
We don't need rental players and at this point I feel we've already had a successful season and tho I'm not expecting a deep playoff run, this is a team that can get hot and surprise other teams.
This playoff push will be good for all the Flames whether their young or old. If we need some kids to come up thats fine...it can only help them grow into better players.
Stay the course, develop the kids and gain experience to become a true contending team for the future. Don't forget, we still have Bennet in our back pocket if need be come playoff time.
