Carnage indeed boys.

At least they left happy. Even if it's a delusional happiness.

Sven was not in the lineup. I wasn't sure if it was a game time decision or some overzealous reporter or whatever claimed Paul Byron was supposed to be a healthy scratch. Byron played so Sven out and Wolf went in the lineup for sick Jiri Hudler.

One thing that bothered me during the telecast (the first time I actually listened in a long time). They kept talking about how the Flames have a knack for coming back in the 3rd and attributed a lot of it to luck saying that sooner or a later a correction will be coming.

That could very well be true, but why can't the correction be coming from the other side of the story? They seem to be insinuating that the 3rd period push will eventually go away, but maybe instead of having poor 1st periods and average second periods, they will start playing better in those periods instead of playing worse in the 3rd. This is a very young team that is already surprising a lot of people. There is no reason they should assume we should still be trending down.

Anyway, it was really nice to see that when Hudler and Gaudreau are kept off the score sheet or absent, others can step in. Bouma and Jooris were buzzing all night.

I do have to give the Oilers credit in the 1st period though. They played pretty good. You could see them getting too cocky for their own good though. I don't know how a bad team like that can so easily be full of themselves after getting a 2 goal lead.

Was Hall even playing last night? I was at a bar so I missed some of the action, but I honestly didn't see him once.

I've got to give the mob of Oiler fans in PL 17/18 props for staying till the bitter end (and for not throwing anything at me for chanting "McDaaaavid").

Having Backlund back definitely seems to have rejuvenated the offense. Now we seem to fairly consistently have at least two dangerous lines per game. Usually Backlund and Monohan's lines but sometimes another line steps up.

I'm starting to think duos might be a better way to think of this team.

Monahan - Colborne
Gaudreau - Hudler
Backlund - Bouma

Mix and match the pieces for the other players depending who has jump in the game (by the 2nd).

Of note is that in many ways Glencross's offense has been "replaced" by Bouma and team seems to have found ways to his skillset throughout the bottom 2 lines. Makes it way easier to trade him near the deadline. Wonder if we target a 2nd pairing defenseman back.

I feel deja vu, I read this story here at least a year ago, except instead of at a bar it was in line at a fast food place in BC, where he turned around and knocked somebody's Canuck hat off.

Wasn't in the lineup. He has a bruise.

It has been this way for a long time now. While forwards play three-per-line, the great player combinations are almost always predicated on two players.

The stats on NHL.com only go back to 1997-98, but that probably doesn't matter because the numbers were much lower prior to the introduction of the shootout. For example, in 1997-98, Colorado and Calgary were tied atop the league with 4 wins when trailing after 2. This year, the Flames had that many in November alone.

Since the introduction of the shootout, a few teams have done it 10 times in a season. In 2005-06, Dallas had 12 comeback wins when trailing after 2. That's the most.

Of the Flames' 9 comeback wins this season, last night's was only the third that ended in regulation (Halloween against Nashville, and the crazy game in Florida in November were the others). The other 6 went to OT, and 2 of those were won in the shootout.

I know Engelland hasn't been great, after his scrap with Gadzic it seemed the Oilers weren't as chippy as they normally can be ie: Ference, Fraser, etc.

Good point, I meant more that Backlund-Bouma combo might now be rated as same as the other combos.

But hey I guess Edmonton will look for ANYTHING to celebrate at this point.

They have to keep in practice for when they win the cup next season.

All of this has just been smoke and mirrors, Edmonton has really been after the record of winning the cup the season after finishing DFL.

When they interviewed Eberle in the second intermission he was going on about how comfortable the team was and how they were so relaxed and felt good playing the game. In his mind it seemed they had already won the game and turned their season around. I wonder how relaxed and comfortable they were ten minutes later...

Anyone see the half dozen jerseys at the dome:

99 McDavid

Obviously something going on since they picked 99... but it was gross to see.
