I wonder how much the flood affected things. For one, a lot of resources had to get poured back into the 'dome, which couldn't have been planned for. I also wonder if the flooding could have affected the viability of one or more of the planned sites for the new building? The West village area wasn't affected too much, but it still might have implications and the East village area saw some significant flooding.
The massive drop in oil price can't be speeding things up either. I expect we'll be waiting even longer now.

Am I the only one that wants the Dome to stay around forever and become like Fenway Park? Old buildings with character and history are way cooler to go see than brand new facilities.
For example, Marlins Park was really really really nice, but something about the charm of a historic place like Fenway just can't be beat...
I get why the Flames want a new building, but it will be a sad day when the Dome is no longer with us. I'm going to enjoy the Dome while we still have it.

Or the costs to build the product will be cheaper....
Normally in recession's costs will lower dramatically.

The Dome does not have that kind of character or history IMO, not the type of building you protect like that.

did gary ask why the concourse is littered with vehicles, thus reducing the amount of availible space for patrons to utilize; or, was he just about building something new?
anywyas, who care, the government has lots of money and they can get more, lets just go ahead and build this thing.......

Yeah....no.
Go to one of the really new NHL facilities and you will never want to set foot into the 'Dome ever again.
You're comparing open-air facilities to closed-air stadiums and theres a HUGE difference. Ice doesnt stick around by magic.

This is true.
But the hit to the ownership group's investments outweighs this, plus the probable decreased willingness of the city/province to pitch in given the collapse.
We're going to look back on 2015 as an epic collapse in the energy business. It's much worse than people think and it'll take a few quarters to sink in. IMO this will affect the timeline of the new arena.

The new building will be less fan friendly than the Dome. It will be all about suites and club seating. I hope KK has to jump through hoops for the next decade to make the new building happen.

Hmmm, I think you are right about more suites, but the rest, I think that will likely drastically depend on how you define "fan friendly".
I think site lines, concession convenience will all have to be better in the new rink (if not, not sure what to say). All of that = more fan friendly.
On the flip side, there may not be the equivalent of the Nose Bleeds right now that allow for I guess some "somewhat" more affordable ticket prices for some crappy seats that do give you a half decent view of the full ice, but do somewhat isolate those fans from accessing the full experience of the arena (which would matter more in a new rink). That, for many may = less fan friendly.

You may not be the only one but you are in the minority. The Dome is a concrete tomb. Yes the roof line has character but inside it's plain, drab, and old and outside it looks like corrugated aluminum bowl. Heck it's isn't even capable of making good ice anymore.

Seriously? The Dome is nowhere near historic like Fenway Park. The Dome is a hole. I can't wait until the Flames are in a new building.

Assuming the new building follows the precedent set by other recent new NHL buildings, it should have: - Wider concourse
- More washrooms (with better access)
- More choices for food/beverages
- Wider, more comfortable seats (with cup holders)
- Better sightlines from the lowest-priced seats
- Easier access to the upper-level seats
- Full secondary concourse for the upper-levels
All of those are improvements to the fan experience for the regular fan.

I know I'm in the minority here, but when I go to a hockey game, I go for the action on the ice, and the beer. I find nothing wrong with the fan experience at the Saddledome when I go to games.
If the club builds a new arena, great. But if it continues to wait and play in the Saddledome, it's no sweat off my back...

That is pretty much the same sales pitch we were given before the 96 renovation.
When the renovation was complete, the season ticket holders got to find out that their seats no longer existed because they had been replaced by luxury boxes and the club level. And their new seats were not as good and more expensive.
This is the same thing all over again. If you have a 200 level seasons ticket, do you really think that you will be offered a comparable seat at a comparable price in the new building? I don't.
Just yesterday, Bettman said that the Dome doesn't have nearly enough suites and club seats. Soooooo, if you put in more luxury seating, that means that there has to be less regular seating.
The new building is not for the common man. It is for the elite. So let the elite pay for it. If Murray Edwards wants to pay for a new building, great!! They can put shovels in the ground tomorrow. If he wants tax dollars to pay for it, he can have it sometime in "the future".

You'd love it in your neighborhood arena or sportsplex then, it's even cheaper than going to the Saddledome. BYOB.

Please tell me you're joking with this post.
New sports facilities, especially those built within the last decade, are more fan friendly than ever. They're mainly built to maximize the ultimate fan experience.

I imagine you were saying at the time of the renovations that the renovated building was not for the common man. It was for the elite. New building comes and you repeat the cycle of complaining it's for the elite all while being proven wrong again. You make it sound like the current season ticket holders will all be replaced by new elite season ticket holders when the new building opens. Sure there will be turnover but I believe you are going just a little overboard here.
