Sven has 5 AHL goals this season
Raymond has 6 NHL goals in one less game
ZOMG! Flames are screwing Sven over and the GM is making Hartley play Raymond

Even if Gadzic is in we have David " The tooth fairy" Wolf in this lineup scenario.

Annoying loss and we get no help from anyone else around the league. We sure could have used this win. Man does Byron suck at breakaways. I knew right away that he wouldn't score with that same dumb 5-hole move that never works. Good effort though. Just makes me hate the Wild that much more. Also kind of annoyed that Vanek's contract was only for 3 years. I wish it was a handcuffing 7 year contract that would drag the Wild down for years to come. Raymond sucks with his useless passes and man so does Bollig. Raymond does this stupid thing where he goes for the slap shot from a sharp angle close to the goal line and it always rims around the board and heads up ice, essentially a giveaway.

I listed a bunch of Raymond mistakes in the game thread, but really, in the third, he generated as much offence as anyone not named Gaudreau. He was cycling, passing pretty well, finding the point for the shot.
I actually thought Jooris, Jones, Colborne and Backlund were not as on top of their game. Colborne fumbled a couple good chances and Jones wasn't banging like last game. Backlund was softer and a bit too casual with the puck at times.

Lol, because that's not inflated by his hat trick against the Oilers in the second game of the season, back when he was an excited hometown boy playing against our provincial rival.
Since then he hasn't done a thing.
I want Mason Raymond to turn it around, but we don't have a strong enough top 6 to be patient with him. He's here as a vet who's supposed to help the team score. Sven's here as a developing player who can stickhandle and pass. His skillset and value just mean more to us.
While I understand that the AHL is the "best place for development" reality is that he's been screwed over by the staff all season. He got cut on his birthday for Mason Raymond, and then while he struggled in ADK he still toughs it out and doesn't request a trade when the media pretty much expected him to. Gets a callup from the big club and gets stuck on lines with no minutes with Setoguchi, Byron, Bollig and of course somehow gets the blame for those lines not scoring. Goes back down to ADK with determination, plays strongly, gets called up again this time and will probably get sent down without any game time.
You can compare the Flames' development to the Red Wings', but the difference is that's a perennial cup contender and guys know they they have to play exceptionally to get the callup and replace good NHLers. Here, guys like Wolf and Sven can play well and have no sureness if they can replace total scrubs on an NHL roster. Us fans aren't even sure of it at this point.
Come on, we've watched Sven for years now, he's never been as bad as Raymond, even if he wasn't the elite talent we all wanted him to be.

I agree. I like Sven, and I really want to see him become a star in the NHL. At the same time he has been very disappointing to watch with the big club.
I think at this point there is only 2 real ways for the Calgary Flames to add scoring. Via trade, or via the rebuild. Honestly as tempting as the playoffs are and as frustrating as it would be to not quite make it, I would like to go the route of the latter.
The only problem with that is…..Right now if we don't make the playoffs we finish just outside of them. AKA the worst possible position for the draft. So in my opinion Brad is in between a rock and a hard place, I almost think we should make a move, or two and bolster the line up to make the playoffs. I have no delusion that we are a contender, although stranger things have happened. However what I do believe is playoff experience, and a slightly worse draft pick, might outweigh missing and still having a little better draft pick.
Again though, what do you lose/gain in a trade? I think a solid 5th/6th defenceman would do the team wonders, and not break the bank. Some scoring would be nice, but likely a little more costly.
Definitely a tough call for Brad.

They are out of proportion, but only because he fails to score so much after getting so many prime chances. He might be a 4th line guy, but if he buries even half of the ones he's missed he'd be a top 9 guy. It's so ridiculous with him missing that I almost wish he never got prime chances like that. Such a tease.

so? Sven has 5 ####ing goals in the AHL
he plays every game against teams worse than the Oilers
Not even saying that Raymond has been good, just pointing out that Sven has been scoring at the same pace...in a lesser league

I'm not on either side of the fence really to this Sven topic, but there's a very real chance right now that Sven can walk on and outproduce Raymond. At least that's the sense I am getting from reading this argument.
I actually think Raymond is coming around right now and with EDM coming up he's due to break his slump. If you take out the infuriating Byron and put Sven in it could be double the pleasure, double the fun.

I like Sven, but I don't really know what he did the last time he was called up that was so special. I thought he was just ok. Could he play better than Raymond? Sure. Could he be worse? Yep. I just don't think it's a given if he replaces Raymond the team will be better.
Hiller was great tonight, too bad the effort was wasted. Hope he plays like that again Saturday, mixed in with a few Flames goals.

Well, he did score since then. I agree it's been a while for him, but same for a few guys in the bottom. As for not doing anything, I just mentioned what I saw him do. And last game he was plus two and contributed directly to at least one of the goals. So not useless. Hartley is pretty quick to yank ice time when he thinks guys are underperforming, and tonight Bollig was the guy. Raymond has been the guy other nights, but Hartley seemed to like his play tonight.
He's not in the top 6. Tonight that would be Monahan, Gaudreau, Hudler, Jones, Backlund, Bouma. He's a third liner.

I am fine with giving Sven a game but he has done nothing to warrant all the praise he gets around here. Had he kicked down the door by playing well at the AHL level or even in camp he would be playing regularly...he hasn't and isn't

Also worth pointing out that Byron was the one that made the beautiful tip pass to Gaudreau for his great rush in the 3rd.
Overall I feel like if we played that exact game Saturday vs Edmonton, we'd win easily.

This is our glaring issue offensively. Jones and Bouma, whom I don't hate, are not top 6 players in the NHL. At least on teams serious about winning a Cup.
