Nobody's suggesting he's a penny overpaid. More like millions of dollars.

The Leafs, the team that Burke built. This is their time to shine, all the players he collected are in their prime (Kessel, JVR, Bozek, Franson, Kadri, Phaneuf, Komarov, Lupul, Gardiner, Rielly). This is literally the pinnacle of that of rebuild. We should watch and admire.

Such a weird team. Very good players most of them, no doubt, but all supporting cast. What in the world was Burke thinking going off building a team around Phaneuf and Kessel?

Please tell me what Phil Kessel is worth? If he's millions overpaid, is he worth 3-4 million?

Top 5 in NHL points the past 4 seasons and you think he's not worth 8 million?

They could trade him tomorrow no problem.

Kessel is good, but to be a winning team with 15 million committed to Kessel and Phaneuf you REALLY can't afford to have any dead weight on the roster. Which of course Toronto does. Tons of dead weight and most of their good contracts are for short term

It goes until he's 34.

The problem is he's been tasked to be a leader when he isn't and the only other leader is Phaneuf. Also think people see Kessel and assume he's 30 years old or something and the contract will bring him to his 40's.

Yeah, but none of that falls on Kessel's shoulders.

He's an elite offensive player in this league. That gets you paid, and rightfully so. You have to have other good pieces in place to win though - and yeah, any team committing 7M to a poor 1st pairing/good 2nd pairing d-man and 5M+ to a 4th line winger is going to have cap problems.

Nothing wrong with 8 years. It's not like he's had a lot of injuries. No games missed in 5 and a half years. Players with Kessel's numbers will now get 9-10 million per easily (In fact Kessel has better stats the last few years than Patrick Kane with less talent and Kane gets 2.5 million per more)

BigTuna is right, for once. They could trade Kessel easily. They won't get a Steven Stamkos back, but they can move him. Phaneuf and Clarkson are trickier.

I assume by "numbers" you mean points. Because there are other numbers that are different. Ever think Kane might have "lesser" numbers over the last 3 years because he's become a more complete player?

Plus Kane is a winner, and big game player. Phil, not so much.

I agree Kessel could be moved. But since he's a complimentary piece and not a guy you build a team around, he will garner far less than Leaf fans would expect.

Kessel is about what you'd expect. I think he and his contract are even value.

Phaneuf is a boat anchor. I never understand what GMs are thinking, he just signed that contract, he was bad then and hes arguably worse now, what were they thinking offering him that contract and then they suddenly realized it was a terrible idea? Did they just do it for HBO Brownie Points? I honestly dont get it. Phaneuf is worth about half that. Maybe.

Clarkson was madness. That was madness from start to finish. Clarkson's contract is the very definition of 'we had a lockout for this?'

I didn't mean he was close to Clarkson in value but he would be nearly impossible to trade with that contract and particularly that term much like Clarkson .....at least if the leafs wanted any sort of return.

Kessel is a very good offensive player who is not a leader, doesn't play a 200' game and has a very questionable fitness level. That simply ain't exactly something all teams are in the market for.

Somehow I think a 33 year old Kessel will play like he's 40.

Seriously, he (a) plays a speed game and (b) seemingly has a fitness issue. Some speedsters who lose a step really drop off in value.

Leaf fans didn't throw jerseys but chanted Carlyle,Carlyle, Carlyle.

I think Horachek has had one win as the coach.

THe Leafs have so many brutal contracts and yet people here are saying Kessel's contract sucks. You guys are crazy.

Clarkson, Phaneuf, Bozak, Robidas, Lupul (hurt all the time)...these contracts are what are killing this team. Plus having a back-up goalie being paid over 2 million a season.

Bernier summoned his inner Toskala tonight and let OEL put one past him from the other side of center ice. Was a short handed goal to tie the game.
