In this case, very likely a surveying issue, or a measurement issue. The steel arch likely had to be ordered before a site measurement could be taken.

The fix is likely chipping some bearing plates out, moving them, and casting them back in. The big cost is the cost of moving the crane in a second time.

Shouldn't have anything to do with the city.
You don't think its newsworthy that a bridge which is now delayed for the second time, is the wrong size? I definitely think it is. I find it hilarious, but then again I'm not involved in these things at all.

According to the Herald article posted earlier the bridge is actually the correct length but the connecting beams are not positioned correctly so the bridge can't be put into place.

Well whatever the issue is, its newsworthy. The thing was supposed to be done last summer and now its just sitting there beside the road.

In the construction industry, this kind of stuff happens all the time. The difference is that this was documented for some reason, likely because it was a slow news day and this was a public project. Shaganappi Trail has been delayed for a while, but there's a certain reason for that.

This is a nothing story that really doesn't deserve the attention it's getting. This isn't costing the taxpayer one cent in additional funds.

What's even funnier is that this is just coming out, they tried to put in 2 weeks ago and found out it wouldn't fit. The bridge is built to spec and so is the concrete abutment, so someone messed up on the drawings. Unless they figured out later one of those was wrong.

6 million to save a few people a 2 minute walk. Plus it looks terrible.

People complain about the Peace Bridge but at least the gap between the two bridges on either side of it was 1.4 km. The gap between the two crosswalks on either side of the new Shagnappi bridge is 350m.

I thought you could already cross Shaganappi very close to there. I seem to recall crossing by foot before (legally) on Dalhousie Dr.

Are they planning on getting rid of some traffic lights there? Or was that crossing too far away?

You're missing the point.

Shaganappi is a big road with heavy vehicle traffic to cross. It's designated as a HOV corridor, so that means priority will be given to N-S traffic, rather than pedestrian traffic wanting to cross over from one side to the other.

Because of this barrier, it greatly discourages pedestrian traffic between either side of Shaganappi, both for crossing over it, as well locally. But if you give them access that doesn't interfere with traffic, and it'll encourage more pedestrian traffic, which leads to more business for retail/commercial on both side of Shaganappi. And in the future, they will likely be residential buildings constructed where Canadian Tire and Northland Mall are right now, so the bridge will be needed anyway.

haha a big city needs plenty of pedestrian bridges to go over streets like this one. The faux outrage over the Peace Bridge has skewed a lot of things in some minds apparently.

Do you know how much it costs to put in things like traffic lights, that save a few motorists 30 seconds of driving or waiting at stop signs?
