The Sox and Sox went NINETEEN innings yesterday... ouch!
Trot Nixon: 0-9, 4k, 5LOB. That has to be almost as incompetent as Alex Gonzalez's six strikeout game!
Wonder if that is the longest game since the Jays and Marlins went 18 about 5 years ago.
Edit: LOL! Nope. Houston went 18 in May.

This week's MLB Power Rankings per CNNSI's John Donovan:
Quote:
How not to be taken seriously: Lose three of four to Kansas City before the break. The Jays can rip the ball with the best of them -- their .840 team OPS is the best in baseball -- but until they get more consistent pitching (and defense), they'll still be behind Nos. 3 and 4 in the PRs and in the AL East.
First-half MVP: B.J. Ryan.
|
My response would be: "How not to be taken seriously: Get the #6 ranked team's record wrong going into break (they split with Kansas City 2-2)".
It's sure nice to see Aaron Hill's BA up to .297
2 months ago it was sub-.200

The marathon goes on today/tonight, that was awesome D in the 13th by the jays, nice diving grabs from Hinske and Wells back to back and a nice play by Hill with the bases loaded to get out of it.

Thought I was going to miss pretty much the whole game because of yard work, so it's kind of a nice surprise.
Now into the bottom of the 14th.

Clutch hit by Molina to win it for Jays in 14.
They needed that one.

phew..really needed that one indeed. In 2 weeks I'm off to Yankee Stadium to watch them, would love to see the Jays still so close to the Yanks come that time.

Man, that will be a pretty sweet trip for you.
I was in NY last summer, but the Yanks were on a road trip. Still got to see the Mets at Shea which was a great time, but I still want to go see Yankee Stadium one of these days.
Have a great time and let us know all the details when you get back.

Ryan blows only his second save of the year. Jays we're 2 outs from getting the W and then the #9 hitter went deep. Hopefully Glaus isn't gone for too long

Phew another almost heartbreaker for the Jays. Cat sure is clutch, big win. Downs deserved the W tonight, although would've been nice to see Burnett get it.
Oakland up on Boston 5-1 in the 9th

The Met's we're willing to trade Wright for Cruz JR. That shows you what the league thought of Wright at that time. JP finally got some money to work with this offseason and I think he's done a hell of a job so far

Or what they thought of Cruz Jr.
In 2000 he hit 31 HR, in 2001 he hit 34 HR. He actually had a pretty good reputation as a hitter before he left the Jays. For some reason JP let him walk as a free agent instead of getting something for him (the Jays were not contending in 2002).
I'm not going to berate JP for not trading him for David Wright, but I will berate JP for not trading him and letting him walk for absolutely nothing.

On yesterday's telecast JP was in the booth for a half inning. He mentioned he called a club to ask about a "fringe starter" (his description) and was told it would cost Alex Rios.

I can believe it. Every team save a select few need pitching right now. Frankly its not worth it to go out and get one - the cost is simply too high.
We musn't forget that getting Chacin back will be like trading for a #3 starter at the deadline. If Burnett can pitch like he did today the team sets up nicely 1-4, and then its just a matter of one of Janssen or one of the other kids grabbing that 5th spot.
BTW on a related note, one of the most under-rated best bargains in MLB this season has been Reed Catalajohnson. What a player!

This series vs. the Yankees is basically going to determine whether we are buyers or sellers at the deadline. JP has said as much.
On the bright side, if we do decide to sell, we've got some extremely attractive assets. Lilly would hands down be the best available starter on the market - which is quite sad really - so he could at least fetch a very decent return.
Speier is also one of the better SU guys in the league available, another quality return. Hillenbrand might have a few suitors... but there seems to be more bats than Pitching available - with the Huff trade last week, he didn't exactly garner a spectacular return.

I agree, the cost is to high. The Jays are better off being a "Seller" and trade guys like Lilly and Hillenbrand. I believe both of those guys are in their last year. Jays could get a great return and make a drive next year. At this point I don't believe the Jays can win the East and the Wild Card is out of the question.

^^^I agree to a point but that might be a tough sell to the fan base that is finally just starting to get back into the team. If the Jays are anywhere near the race (say within 5/6 games) and turn into sellers at the deadline that's going to send a very bad message to the fan base about the intentions of the team to compete. I would be more inclined to trade just Hillenbrand but hang to Lilly if they are near the race. Hinske has shown an ability the last few weeks to play well when back in the lineup so he can take over some of Shea's time. But the Jays don't have anyone that would replace Lilly in the rotation.

I agree, I guess the risk for JP is if he keeps Lilly and then they fall back. He will more and likely lose this guy in the off season. Its going to be a tough call at the trade deadline but if I was betting, I bet JP will sell a few of his players which have value and are in their last year of their contracts.
However I hope the Jays go on a 8 or 9 game winning streak
