That is exactly it.

You can do something like Fleury + Semin for Agostino.

Then you flip Semin to somewhere else with a couple million retained for a return.

Costs you only money and you could get two good prospects.

You could even give Semin a chance here until the end of the year. Never know if he finds chemistry with Hudler or Gaudreau, goes on a tear and then worth more in the offseason.

I can't believe there's people who would want this guy on our rebuilding young team.

From everything we have heard Trelving/Burke are likely all over this if the Canes are willing to cough up a valuable asset

The 5 year deal the Hurricanes gave Semin was ridiculous to begin with. I'm glad to see it biting them in the ass.

This could be a test of the Hurricanes' owners. I assume they are one of the teams who operate on an internal budget and paying $7 million x 3 years is a huge burden.

Wonder if they would even consider dangling their first-round pick - likely a top five pick - with Semin for something in return. Probably not, but it is the owner's money.

if you get a 2015 1st rounder as part of the deal it would be hard pressed not to pull the trigger

any trade for Semin needs Carolina's first or equivalent coming back.

We then flip Semin while retaining salary

No, I think they want the contract and some wicked prospect or pick.

If the Flames do a cap dump type trade, I would prefer Semin over Richards for a couple reasons. Term remaining on the contract is the biggest reason. The Richards deal is just too long. There's also the fact that the Flames and Kings are fighting for the same playoff spot and the Flames shouldn't do anything that helps the Kings. And the last reason, is organizational "need" (I use this term loosely). Sure, Semin is pretty much useless at this point, but at least he plays a position that the Flames are really weak at, and he's more likely to rediscover his game than Richards is. The Flames surprisingly have solid centre depth, and Richards would just be in the way.

You could say the Semin contract would be easier to swallow.

Spoiler!

I'll never forget the hilights one night when the Caps were playing I believe the Canes and the Caps were getting blown out. The camera pans over to Semin who is resting his sweet head on the bench like a jr high kid in math class. I can't believe people are suggesting we bring him over simply because his contract is better then Richards and he fits a ''need''. What need is that exactly? Someone to disrupt chemistry or be an outcast on the team? Give your heads a shake.

If a team were to buyout Semin this summer, it would be a cap hit of $2.333 million for the next 6 years.

Said it at that time but this is the kind of player that should never be given more than a 2 year contract, preferrably 1 year. Guy is a useless floater.

This is the Semin thread, not the Glencross thread.

I don't think the people advocating picking him up are doing so to fill a need... rather to get the asset (high pick or good prospect) that has to come with him for us to take him, AND to try and get an asset after flipping him and keeping 33-50% of his salary.

On a rebuilding team with $ available, these are good opportunities. Heck, we can even put him on waivers ourselves and send him to the minors if nothing else...

I'd trade Raymond for Semin plus a 2nd rounder or something for saving them some $$.

Same term for both player IIRC.
