Yeah, but he at least tried. And he made some saves. Put him in yesterday's game and he's the best goalie on the ice.

"That's 8 goals in the first period meaning we're on pace for 32!"
Yep

Yeah that was a classic. I too thought it was Healy at first, but when I played it back for the wife to hear, I thought maybe it was Galley.
Either way, it was one of the highlights of the ASG for me.

And RNH was only there because they needed an Oiler.

Nathan MacKinnon didn't play.

So they were talking about JG's $212K bonus for playing in the ASG this morning, and speculating that perhaps that was why he was kept out at first (maybe someone thought "maybe we should ask the Flames first"). I wonder though if that bonus applies to replacements?
Also, since the "player from every team"came back and fan vote ballot stuffing is now a thing, teams might go away from giving those bonuses regularly. I imagine Zemgus' gm is cursing the system now. And the Oilers are now a little closer to the cap, assuming RNH has a bonus clause.

The bonus thing really only applies to players still on their ELC and only if it was negotiated in before they signed, so I don't think it is a big issue. RNH is no longer on his ELC, so there will be no bonus.
And yes by the language of the CBA, the bonus is achieved if the player is selected to play or plays in the all star game
edit: Also the players who are selected/play in the ASG receive an "appearance fee" the NHL pays them that doesn't count against the cap.

Who's getting bent out of shape? Some people are simply observing that there's a threshold for compete level below which a hockey game stops being recognizable as a game in any normal sense of the term. In the last 10 years or so the NHL all-star game sank below that threshold, for reasons that aren't entirely clear.

Phil Kessel should be an Oiler. He is terrible.

Thanks. Although don't at least some players negotiate bonuses for awards or achievements in non ELC contracts? They did in the past. I remember Iggy had some. And there were sometimes controversies where players were held out of games or skipped games on their own to achieve a particular stat. I remember one gm who suggested that a player claimed he was injured in the last few games only to try and maintain a bonus level PPG stat.

since the 2005 cba, performance bonuses can't be included in contracts unless
a) it is an ELC
b) it is for a 1 year contract on a 35+ year old player
c) it is a one year contract for a player who missed significant time due to injury in the previous year

Thanks again. I am obviously old and you are the reason I don't need to read the CBA.
But damn - I liked performance bonuses by and large. I guess that was a "give" by the NHL.

I don't think the purpose of the game is to see NHLers having fun and hanging out. It is to market the game by displaying the best talent and hopefully having an entertaining competition that non-fans could tune into and become interested in watching more NHL games. It really isn't an event for hardcore hockey fans, it is marketing bait.
It's hard to view the game from a non-fan's perspective. Would they have been entertained by 17-12 country club scrimmage? I have my doubts.

You think non-fans are going to watch that crap and become fans? All it did was turn them off the game for good.

Yeah, the single greatest appeal of pro hockey is the intensity. I doubt many people become fans of the game because they like to watch the dangling skills of guys playing at 30 per cent intensity.

Maybe this is here already, but did anyone else see Johnny jump out of his skates when they fired the cannon during the skills comp?

Absolutely they do. Kids for generations have and someone who's never seen a hockey game might come to a spectacle like that
