I agree. The new format truly gets the least out of the players. At least with the Conference format there is a bit of a rivalry and some pride on the line. North America vs the world is even better.

Thank goodness I'm in Arizona right now and couldn't watch any of it (assuming there was actually a TV station showing it....).

So was there nobody from Colorado? Seemed weird they didn't have anyone unless I'm missing something.

I think the event is terrible if they aren't going to hustle at least a little bit. Fail to see how putting a pep in your step will automatically get you injured but there are apologists for everything.

Erik Johnson was their representative this year but dropped out due to injury.

Erik Johnson was supposed to be there but got hurt. Same reason there were no Red Wings, Jimmy Howard was hurt.

How did Johnny do? Looks like Gio had a quiet but good game?

(I know the game doesn't really matter, just curious)

The only way to fix the All-Star game would be to put up some serious money to the winning team. Something like $10 million to the winning team and $0 to the losing team. Otherwise they should just cancel it.
Yeah, I do wonder why the intensity is dramatically lower than it was 20-30 years ago - which wasn't exactly high to begin with. Presumably with so much more money involved today, nobody wants to exert even an NHL practice level of effort out of fear of injury.

The thing that gets me is the more or less complete lack of effort on the part of the goalies. You could put a circa 1989 Mike Vernon in net - tiny, unathletic Mike Vernon wearing tiny equipment and hung over from the all star weekend festivities - and he puts on a better performance than any of the goalies today.

Maybe they should ditch the goalies altogether and just have targets or something.

couple nice assists, made some good plays

honestly the game was so half assed (even for an allstar game) its hard to say anyone did bad or good

I think the best All-star games are the ones in Olympic years, where they name the team but don't play the game.

I think the regular season 20-30 years ago was slower so the all-star game couldn't be that much slower. In a real game in 1984 players skated around and had 2+ minute shifts. All Star game was a collection of great stars playing pretty much the same.

Hockey today is so fast. 40 second shifts, skate skate skate, cycle cycle cycle, line change, skate skate skate. It's insane. So when they dipsy doodle in the all star game today, it looks a lot slower then the norm.

I have enjoyed all star games in the past, but that was the worst all-star weekend I've ever seen. Everything seemed pretty pointless and seemed like going through the motions. Even the commentators and TV presenters seem to be grasping at straws to explain how "special" this weekend was.

I don't see the point in televising a bunch of highly skilled hockey players pretty much do everything they can not to play the game of hockey, even though they have equipment on. I get it, they don't want injuries. But I've seen more intense pond hockey.

I have no need to watch NHL players on vacation.

Not sure why so many adults are getting bent out of shape here. I loved the asg as a kid; I remember having no real team I loved more than another (didn't like the Oilers, which was basically my entire family's team, so I sort of just watched whatever else was on) and being amazed by guys like Chelios, Roenick, Sakic, Yzerman putting up wild points year after year. I can be completely honest and say that I had absolutely no appreciation for the defensive side of the game (although it was less developed then); the ASG was awesome because I saw a wack of goals. It's fun and not meant to be a serious competition. Imagine how screwed a team like Chicago could potentially be with the number of players they sent ?

Every first overall pick in the last 12 years played... Except 2010 and 2012...

Who was drafted those years again? I can't seem to remember.

I use to dread Vernon playing in the all star game. He wouldn't be any good for a month afterwards.
