Don't believe this is correct. Due to his injury, he may have been kept on-roster, but he didn't make the team.

I think you are underestimating him. The Pens finished 32 points above the Flames last year. If you conservatively say that a talent like Deryk is worth half that difference he could be worth 16 points, putting the Flames right in the playoff race.

After an impressive performance at camp and at the Young Stars Classic tournament in Penticton, the organization decided he was ready to turn pro rather than return to the OHL with the Windsor Spitfires. He was assigned to the Abbotsford Heat to start the year but understood he had a chance to play in his first NHL game this season, so long as he proved himself in the AHL.

In the last two years he had 45 games of decent play in the OHL. I know the Flames roster is weak but I think that they don't put random guys in the NHL for the hell of it.

Absolutely hilariou contract. This guy is a 6th defensemen at best. Almost as bad as the Nikitin contract.

In retrospect, that was too optimistic.

Worst case is that the Flames are on the hook for 2 million cap wise for two years if they send him to Adirondack. Either that or they're on the hook for 1 million for the next 4 years if they buy him out.

It wasn't a great signing, but, as they say, foresight is 20/20.

It's not really a big deal either way. The Flames are not going to be a cap team any time soon, so it will allow them to at least stay above the floor.

It's interesting that all of Treliving's moves thus far have either been really good, or really bad. Not a lot in between.
Bollig - Terrible
Raymond - Terrible
Engelland - Terrible
Setoguchi - Terrible
Diaz - Filler
Bennett - Great
McDonald - Great
Smith - Very Good
Hickey - Great
Hiller - Great
Shore for Knight - A likely NHL roster player for a guy near the bottom of the forward depth ranks.

This was clearly about meeting the cap floor. The fact they got one of the toughest guys in the league who plays defense and shoots right is a bonus.
I like having him in the lineup. He's physical and the opposing team doesn't try anything stupid with him there. In fact with him and Bollig in the line up, the team has rarely been pushed around.
There has been only one game this year where the Flames were physically intimidated and pushed around, and that was against the Florida Panthers, a game that both Bollig and Engelland did not dress, and McGrattan had just been waived.

Nothing wrong with Engelland. He and Smid aren't working as a pair, but both of them would be better with a better skating, puck-moving partner.
Engelland and Wotherspoon might be more effective.

We didn't have Bollig and Engelland on the team last year, and I certainly can't recall any game where the team got bullied.
Unless you include the time we did the bullying to the Canucks.
