Ortio, Granlund, & Wotherspoon assigned to Adirondack
per the AHL transactions page.
http://theahl.com/stats/transactions.php
Makes sense... no reason for them to be up with the main club during the all star break

no reason they can't be called up after the break btw...
for comparison sake, San Jose sent Hertl and Goodrow down too.

San Jose's moves makes sense from a salary cap perspective.
For Calgary, it seems pointless unless those three will play an AHL game before the NHL resumes its schedule.

I'm assuming there are games they can play in, but they would also go back to AHL paycheques.

Granlund is a but if a mystery. Kind if see him as bonafide, but Jooris coming back might have something to do with it.

The same San Jose that projects to be able to add $25 million in salary at the deadline?
Even if they don't get into any games, which they should considering they play back to back games Friday and Saturday, Adirondack can actually do practices, Calgary can't.

Adirondack plays this Friday and Saturday and not another game until the next Saturday, so they could get into 2 games before being recalled.

I thought I read that they were keeping Ortio for Wednesday game and he would not attend all star game? Guess they changed their mind

Interesting. I still don't understand why the Flames didn't send Ramo for an AHL conditioning stint. Both he and Hiller need extra games more than Ortio does and I don't see how that's going to happen after the All-Star break with 3 goalies in the mix.

Just a theory at this point, but I think the Flames told the AHL that Ortio will not be attending the ASG game on Sunday and/or Monday because he would be travelling back to Calgary on one of those days so he would be ready for Tuesday's game against Buffalo.

Agreed that this would have been the perfect time to get Ramo down there for some conditioning given the NHL break and he needs more game action right now than Ortio does.

Players can't be assigned to a conditioning stint unless they agree to it. If Ramo refuses to go, the Flames can't force him to.

Seeing how he bounces back after getting yanked in a game (even though I'd argue none of the goals allowed were due to mistakes by him / were shots he should have saved... 3 deflections and a perfect pass) is really important to see what his mindset is as a possible NHLer. Even if it is against Buffalo.

I assume you are just musing that this may be the case? I think something has to give here. Hartley's right - it's not good for any of the three or for the team to keep 3 goalies on the roster. Funny to see Hiller right back in a similar situation to the one he found himself in last year.

Ortio, Granlund, and Wotherspoon being sent down makes perfect sense over the Allstar week so the Flames like every other NHL team can save on salary for those few days with 2 way contracts.
I'm not condemning the move it is financially speaking a smart move. Actually it is a kind of a harsh reminder how cut throat the business side of sports is.

I don't think that's really the reason. I expect all three to play tomorrow (or Saturday). They could have sent Jooris and Gaudreau too if that was the thinking. Actually, sending Jooris down for a game would have made sense to me since he's working his way back into game shape.

They told Gaudreau and Jooris to get their own places (+ Gaudreau is actually going to the all-star game). Although I agree Jooris could probably use an extra game to get his game legs back... he didn't look so hot last game.

Glencross could be ready for the next game so in order to recall Ortio we need the 14th forward spot space, so Granlund goes down. Wotherspoon goes down to get the playing time as he may not get much action with the Flames.

I disagree, even if the Flames were thinking about doing that (I doubt they were). Let Gaudreau have a break, he isn't used to the grind of an NHL schedule. Jooris has been battling injury so give him a break too.
