Default Bertuzzi to Retire

http://www.canucksfanfeed.com/sad-da...canucks-great/

I have Nothing to say (cause if ya can't say something nice...), other than he could have been one of the greats, but ruined it and himself with one bone headed emotional attack.

I remember playing hockey when I was younger, and Bert hadn't had his incident yet. My coach always called me a younger, better looking Bertuzzi. Soft hands. Hard nose. Wicked shot. Too bad other players got better and I didn't.

I always had a soft spot for Big Bert. Screw up or not, I liked the player save for his attack on Moore. And despite everything, I liked him as a Flame.

Was your mom a good coach?

Flames missed him when not re signing him when Brent came aboard. He wanted to stay here and seemed to do well. Effortless skating.

Not until Gaudreau did they have a player who had the hands, skating, and confidence with the puck...especially to carry the puck into the opposition zone and establish the zone.

Bonus points for causing Jock Wilson to lose his crap, and childishly call King and Iginla liars for their support of Bertuzzi signing.

Some top notch goals as Flame...another year or two here would've been better than the forward they ended up icing at points that season.

Taking the puck off the skates, then going in on net, a slight skate twitch, at full speed vs the Blackhawks, freezes the goalie and able to deke around.
The snipe of a shot to win the game in Nashville with 20 seconds left.
Weaving around, and through, the sea of sticks in Anaheim to score a great goal.
Hands to go around the Oilers goalie and score from behind the net.
Knocking the puck up off the ice and going around Lydman, picking it up on the other side, and another snipe on Miller.
The great play by Langkow to get him to pass while diving, crashing the net on the backhand for the OT winner in Minnesota.

Shootout vs Oilers

A few days before that Oilers goal (or maybe the next night?), he did this move (starts at 44 seconds) but hit the post vs Luongo at the Dome.

Should have hung them up a few years ago but teams kept paying him so whatever I guess. Have nothing nice to say.

Should've been forced to retire with Steve Moore, am I right?

Was one of my favorite players in the early 2000s. Was so pumped when Calgary signed him and always thought it was a mistake letting him go.

Never recovered from that Steve Moore garage.

But will be missed by some. Great skill, had great personality, and I will certainly miss his play. I will always honour his drive to continue playing, despite stubbornly angry fans. Avery (or name another malicious pest) gets more support, yet he constantly injured players in intent. Bertuzzi does it once in retaliation, and became the whipping boy.

Wow, this news totally blindsided me.

He wasn't the fastest guy in the game, but he always played at a breakneck pace.

I can't put it any better than you just did. I actually wish Bertuzzi was kept around here a little longer. All things aside I quite liked him.

I don't usually post in retirement/farewell threads but here's wishing Bertuzzi all the best in the future.

I was totally against the signing of him. Thought he should have never been allowed to play again.

But when he was here he won me over - not because of his on ice play but because he and his wife legitimately did good things in the community. He did a bunch of stuff without having the PR team chase him around for gratuitous photo shots as well. They seemed to give a damn about those less fortunate.

Hope he enjoys retirement.

He made a stupid, stupid decision that I am sure he regrets, and will unfortunately define his career. If you take away the Moore incident he had a great career.

It's hard to begrudge the guy for all eternity, we've all done things we regret, but fortunately we don't do them in such a public fashion. I threw a rock at a skunk when I was a kid, and killed it in it's tracks. Just meant to scare it off. But if that was broadcast worldwide, I am sure I would be forever known as the skunk killer. 31 years later, I still regret it, and feel horrible about it.

Won't be missed. Shouldn't have played another game after the Moore incident.

We all do things in life we regret but at the same time we can also make amends for things we have done. Bertuzzi could have settled out of court with Moore but chose instead to make Moore fight for years for what he deserved. That's not making amends.
