Typical Avery stuff given the overtones of self entitlement. I don't know why the assumption is that a guy who plays 5 years should never have to work again and should have enough to retire on. I get the sacrifices and commitments they make but they're rewarded handsomely. And Sean, no one put a gun to your head and forced you to buy $750 pants. You made the choice, now live with them.

When Ference was posting here didn't he laugh at the high 10% figure some of us thought agents typically get?

But because it's Avery, I guess we should all pretend he can't make valid points about anything ever.
How are we supposed to take an article based on simple math seriously, when the author can't do simple math himself?

If you think Sean Avery was the only young NHL who made that assumption you're dreaming. I'm betting most of the guys who get a one-way contract in the NHL assume they'll never have to work again. If anything, Avery is trying to point out the folly of that assumption.

Avery isn't an especially likeable guy, but he's one of the few people willing to point out some of the more foolish attitudes common among players in the league.

Yeah, I am not an Avery fan by any means, but the tone that I read it in is more about him acknowledging his own folly/ignorance, and not about preaching or whining about any kind of injustice. Especially the part about him feeling like he needed to buy an expensive vehicle to fit in better.

One key thing that I don't get from this whole article.... What is the New Avery Rule?

He doesn't go and spell it out or describe what it is. He just mentions the name a bunch of times.

That's his point, that he shouldn't have done that. He even said what he should have done.

He's trying to help others by giving them advice on mistakes he made. That's the opposite of self centered.

He's not making excuses. He's trying to help others avoid his mistakes. He's completely owning the mistakes.

He's saying that the average career earnings are $13.2M. That does seem like enough to retire on. If you were in the top 1% of earners in Canada (minimum $191,000 per year) it would take you 69 years of working to attain that figure. If you can make that in 5 years you theoretically should have enough to last you the rest of your life. He's also not saying he was forced to buy the pants. He's saying it was a bad decision that he wishes he hadn't made, and that he hopes others don't make the same one.

What in the heck happened here? A guy writes an article to warn people of mistakes he made and how to avoid them, and he gets crapped on? If this was Iginla would you be praising him for being a stand up guy? There are lots of pitfalls for young athletes coming into money. Here's one easy way to have some extra money saved. Here are also some scenarios that you are going to face and some advice for when you find your self there. I know the NHL (and other leagues too) give the rookies a conference to help them, but it's stuff like this that can also aid. The crap you're giving him here is unwarranted.

Don't spend your per diem. The whole thing is explained in the 3rd to last paragraph.

Quote:
If a player just banked that per diem, after a 10-year NHL career, he’d have $124,800. Sure, you can go buy that Denali, or you can put 20 percent down on a starter home in the Hamptons (yes, those Hamptons). There are bargains for $400k. You’d have to pay $10k in closing costs and you’d still have $34,800 to spruce the place up, then you could re-sell it for $100k more than you paid for it. And buy the next one.

To my knowledge working with some of these players, take home is much closer to 40%-50% after paying out everything you need to.

Avery didn't want to buy a used Bronco, apparently he doesn't like sloppy seconds.

Shanahan wrote a piece to his younger self as well a few months back. Starts off with 'Hey, dumb dumb," LOL.

He gets crapped on because he still managed to make it about himself. Is there any reason to call it the "New Avery Rule"? Why not just talk about the advice without tagging it with your own name?

"So really, that $13.2 million becomes $660,000."

I thought he must have meant $6,600,000 and they missed a digit at first glance. I can't believe that much is gone just from escrow, agent and taxes. Do people think that Crosby's approx. 8.8 million could possibly turn into $440,000 per year?

I think it's more so a stab at the original Avery rule which he references.
